Lily froze, caught off guard, before her anger snapped back. “Rebecca, who do you think you are? Since when can you make Wade show up just because you say so? Do you think he’s your personal assistant?”
Rebecca looked over, calm and unfazed. “And how do you know he isn’t?”
A stunned silence rippled through the room.
Ladd, who had been eager to help just a moment ago, immediately pulled away. When someone says things that wild, it’s probably smart to keep your distance.
Magee’s face turned red with anger. “Rebecca, my grandfather spent his entire life making breakthroughs in biological science. He’s achieved so much. How can you be so disrespectful?”
And after he’d just tried to defend her. This was beyond ungrateful.
Felice jumped in, her voice tight with frustration. “Rebecca, Wade has helped you before. If you can’t be grateful, at least don’t talk about him like that.”
Rebecca just shrugged, a little helpless. Sometimes honesty really was harder for people to handle than a lie.
“What’s with all the noise?”
A deep, commanding voice cut straight through the tension.
Everyone turned. Wade, looking lively despite his silver hair, strode in. Ablitt followed behind, along with another teacher, sharp-featured and serious, who had that unmistakable academic vibe.
Magee looked like he’d seen a ghost. His grandfather, who never came out for anything, was standing right there.
