She’d been wracking her brain for a way to deal with Rebecca, and just like that, Rebecca landed right in front of her. Too good a chance to let slip.
The second Garnett heard that Wade might get dragged into this, he could barely breathe. “Lily, it wasn’t Rebecca’s fault. This is on me… Please don’t tell Wade…”
Lily glared at him like he wasn't even worth her time. “Who do you think you are, telling me what to do? I’ll talk to Ablitt about you. I have no idea what he’s teaching you students if you think it’s okay to plagiarize.”
Garnett looked like all the color had drained from his face.
Rebecca, watching Lily’s accusations get worse by the second, cut in with a chill in her voice. “Do you realize what it means to wrongly accuse a student without any proof?”
Lily wasn’t used to being challenged. Her husband was on the board—she’d made a habit of mocking students she didn’t like, and nobody ever dared to talk back. Now her smile faded fast.
“Oh, so you think plagiarizing is something to be proud of?” Lily snapped back. “Rebecca, don’t think Wade will always protect you. In my classroom, what I say goes. I’m calling him a cheater today. What will you do about it? And let me tell you, I’m not stopping here. I’m going to report what you did to the entire school. Everyone will know what you’re really like. We’ll see if Wade still stands up for you then.”
Paulina, who’d been terrified her scheme would be discovered, felt her tension evaporate as she watched Lily go off on Rebecca. Suddenly, Lily seemed like the best thing that could’ve happened.
“Lily, you can’t accuse Rebecca and Garnett of cheating just because of what Gavin said,” Magee broke in, his voice calm but firm. “If you want to take this up with Wade, you’d better be sure first. If you’re wrong, you’ll have to answer for it too.”
Honestly, he wouldn’t have bothered if she didn’t show real musical talent.
Paulina—who’d been secretly thrilled a moment ago—froze. She stared at Magee, shocked.
He was always polite to her, but everyone knew Magee kept his distance and never went out of his way for anyone. Yet here he was, standing up for Rebecca.
The room went silent. Everyone stared at her, stunned.
Before they found out Wade was the president, most people thought he was more legend than reality. Even if something huge happened, it was always Ablitt who handled it. The president himself? Almost never seen.
Once the truth came out, they all realized it wasn’t that Wade didn’t care—he was just insanely busy. Nobody would dare go to him for something ordinary, not when he had a million important things on his plate.
And now, Rebecca was just a first-year, not even a fully registered student… and she was saying Wade would be right over, just like that?
Nobody could believe it.
