Vantage Point University
Rebecca had promised to meet Laura tonight. She only needed one last thing—a signed leave slip—to get herself off campus.
She wasn’t in the mood for Lily’s usual drama, so she skipped right past her and marched toward Wade’s office. When she got there, the door was locked.
Not wanting to waste any more time, Rebecca doubled back and knocked on Ablitt’s office door instead.
Ablitt listened to her request, but his face twisted with worry. “Rebecca, there’s an exam tomorrow. You should get some sleep in your dorm, rest up, and save your energy. This could be your perfect comeback moment.”
She was one of Wade’s favorite students. There was no way she could afford to mess up now.
Rebecca’s expression didn’t even flicker. She stood there, all cool distance and quiet confidence, like frost dusting a mountain peak.
“No. I need to go out tonight.” Her voice was soft but steady. “Just write the leave slip. I’ll explain to Wade myself when he gets back.”
Ablitt tried to reason with her, forcing a smile. “Rebecca, it’s not Wade I’m worried about. I just don’t want you to jeopardize your exam results by not getting enough rest. You made that bet with Lily and the stakes are huge. Don’t you think you should take this seriously?”
Was she even taking him seriously? If tomorrow went badly, Wade would absolutely blow up. He’d dig up this whole late-night outing and Ablitt would be the one getting scolded, not Rebecca.
Why should he be blamed for something he couldn’t control?
Rebecca quirked an eyebrow, her chilly, delicate face carrying a kind of quiet authority that made the air feel heavier.
Ablitt shivered a little. Somehow, confronting Wade never made him this nervous.
What was wrong with him? Why did Rebecca seem even more intimidating than Wade?
Paulina got a good look. That was Rebecca, no mistake.
But she had no clue how Rebecca managed to get a signed pass to go off campus.
“Maybe she needed a break from all that studying,” Paulina said.
Felice rolled her eyes. “Seriously? In the days she’s been here, we’ve had more meals than she’s read books. And she’s already made that bet with Lily. If she doesn’t get first place, she has to drop out. Does she look even slightly nervous? No. Instead, we’re stressing over every little thing and barely get to breathe.”
Paulina honestly just liked hearing criticism about Rebecca lately. Seeing Felice so riled up, she decided to play the comforting friend.
“Felice, you shouldn’t be so hard on Rebecca. Vantage Point might be the only school that would take her. Maybe she made that bet with Lily because she’s scared people will judge her. I think she just wants to stay here, that’s all.”
