“Tell him to send someone to pick it up at the boutique in three days.”
There was no reason to leave money on the table.
Besides, tonight wasn’t just about meeting Laura. She also needed to stop by her research base. Time was ticking, and the quicker she finished up with Laura, the better.
Her research facility, tucked away in the mountains at Harrisburg’s edge, was basically her headquarters. After learning she wasn’t the Jameses’ biological daughter, problems seemed to come one after another. She hadn’t been able to get back out there in ages.
Now that she finally had some breathing room, it was about time for a visit.
Rebecca slipped off her headphones and left Suite 06.
She had barely walked out when Aaron pushed open the door. The empty room made him pause.
“Mr. White, no one’s here.”
Norris glanced inside. The chairs hadn’t moved. Not a single glass out of place. Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that someone had just been there.
“Take a look around,” he said.
Laura’s wireless earbuds were tiny, best for short-range use. If someone wanted a good hiding spot, this suite would have been perfect.
Aaron signaled the bodyguards to start searching.
They combed through everything, but after a sweep from corner to corner, they found nothing unusual.
“Norris, there’s nothing out of the ordinary.”
Norris’s gaze grew distant. Was he just imagining things?
Then a soft, clean scent drifted through the air. It was fresh, almost addicting, and strangely familiar.
“Mr. White, did you find anything?” Aaron asked, noticing Norris staring intently into the suite.
Norris just shook his head. “It’s fine. Let’s go.”
The whole deal with BLUE was already done. There was no point hanging around.
Still, that fragrance nagged at him. Where had he smelled it before?
A guest? That piqued her interest.
She thought for a second, then asked, “Did you see a short older man with gray hair? Gives off serious vibes?”
The manager’s eyes lit up with recognition. “You must mean the gentleman who got out of the black Maybach at the entrance.”
Rebecca felt a jolt of surprise. “Right, that’s him.”
Then it clicked. “So he’s the one Irvin’s meeting with?”
“Yes. Do you know him?” the manager asked, voice full of respect.
Rebecca didn’t reply. Instead, she just looked thoughtful.
It didn’t make sense. These two people moved in totally different worlds. How had they ended up together tonight?
As she was trying to figure it out, a syrupy, mocking voice floated over to her.
“Rebecca, I thought you’d gone back to Cabinda to work as a nanny? Why are you still in Harrisburg? Did you get fired and now you’re here hunting for another job?”
