Odom’s voice echoed through her earbuds, chatty as always.
“That place you wanted me to look up, Elysian Fields Medical? It burned down nineteen years ago. Wiped out completely. Most files are gone. What’s made you suddenly interested in it?”
Rebecca’s lips curled up just a bit. “Do you think the people at the orphanage always knew who my real parents were?”
She could remember nothing before the orphanage. Calling it a home would have been a joke—hell was closer to the truth. The kids there were nothing more than a resource for the wealthy, used for blood or organs. Some were treated as human experiments, lab rats for anyone who could pay enough.
By five, she’d learned exactly what she was worth to them—and what they planned to take when she was “big enough.” If it hadn’t been for her blood unexpectedly matching Shirley’s, making her valuable to the Jameses, she probably wouldn’t have survived long enough to get out. That accident was why she had swallowed everything the Jameses and Shirley put her through, year after year.
When she finally grew strong enough to set things right and track down the monsters from the orphanage, she arrived to find the place already in ruins. All the staff and over a hundred kids had disappeared without a single trace.
Rebecca had chased their trail ever since. Only today, after uncovering the truth of her own disappearance, did she suddenly realize how everything might be connected. It was starting to look like her entire childhood had been one big setup, a conspiracy right from the start.
A few days later, the Russells’ main hall was filled with chaos. Rebecca watched as Madonna piled up suitcase after suitcase, never stopping to think maybe she’d already overpacked. Madonna was still fussing, checking every last thing, making sure Rebecca had everything she could possibly need—clothes, snacks, toiletries, the works.
Finally, Madonna sighed and gave Rebecca a tight, worried smile. “Your dad and I can’t come with you to Harrisburg, so if you find you need anything, just call home, okay? I’ll make sure it’s sent straight to you.”
Fabian handed over a credit card and a set of keys. “Here’s your spending money. I’ll top it up every month, but if it runs short, just let me know. These are the keys to a villa at Shadowmere Estates. If dorm life isn’t your thing, you can stay there. There’ll be people coming in to keep the place tidy.”
