When Neely dropped Rebecca off at the entrance of her dorm, he was visibly taken aback.
This particular apartment building was reserved exclusively for those who had made outstanding contributions to the university. Traditionally, only the top ten ranked students at Vantage Point were allowed to live here. Not even he qualified. So how was Rebecca, a brand-new freshman, staying here?
Then he remembered the rumors about how heavily favored she was by the president, and it suddenly made total sense.
Someone as badass as Rebecca naturally deserved a few special privileges.
Before heading out, he cast a long, lingering look at the luxury dorms.
One day, he was going to earn a spot in that building too!
Back in the cafeteria.
Having completely lost her appetite thanks to Rebecca and Neely, Paulina barely touched her food before listlessly standing up to leave.
Unluckily, the moment she stepped out, she ran into a beaming Gavin Michel. "Paulina, what a coincidence. I didn't expect to run into you here."
The gloom in Paulina's eyes vanished the second she saw him.
Forcing a bright smile, she replied, "It really is."
Noticing her dampened spirits, Gavin instantly shifted into protective mode. "What's wrong, Paulina? Did someone bully you?"
That was exactly what she had been waiting to hear. She let out a soft, tragic sigh. "It's nothing... I'm used to it by now."
Gavin instantly recognized the forced bravery in her tone and grew anxious. "What happened? Who messed with you? Tell me, and I swear I'll make them pay!"
Paulina gently shook her head.
"Thank you for caring, but it's not the first time Rebecca has targeted me. I'm fine, really. You have the exam this afternoon and that massive bet on the line. Don't waste time on me when you should be prepping... I'll just take a walk and clear my head."
Hearing it was Rebecca again, Gavin gnashed his teeth in fury.
"Her again! Wasn't it enough that she humiliated me last time? Now she's going after you. Don't worry, Paulina, I'll definitely settle this score for you!"
Paulina continued to shake her head. "Forget it. The drama from last time just barely settled down. If you start more trouble, the president will never let you off the hook."
Seeing that she was entirely worried about his well-being, Gavin was deeply moved.
"I messed up last time, but I promise I won't disappoint you today. I am absolutely confident I'll win the bet. Once I do, Rebecca won't have the face to stay at Vantage Point. When she's gone, no one will ever make you unhappy again!"
Paulina's eyes sparkled. "Really?"
Did he really have a foolproof way to win the bet?
Gavin nodded firmly, his face brimming with absolute certainty, though he didn't offer any specific details.
At last, a deeply satisfied smile graced Paulina's lips.
Hopefully, this time, Gavin wouldn't let her down.
...
Rebecca seized the lunch break and managed to sleep for a solid two hours. When she woke up, her energy was fully restored.
"That ungrateful brat!" he roared, slamming his phone furiously onto his desk.
Completely unaware of the situation, his assistant flinched. "Mr. James, if they aren't picking up, we could try calling from a few other phones," he suggested timidly.
"There's no need. That embarrassing excuse for a daughter... Does she really think I'm desperate for her help?" Jackson cursed venomously, waving the assistant out of the room.
The assistant quickly took the hint and slipped out, closing the office door behind him.
Jackson tried reaching out to his massive client again, but the line remained unanswered.
He had originally been introduced to this client through a partner company the James Group had worked with for years. After failing to get through, Jackson hesitated for a moment before yanking open a drawer and digging through a stack of well-preserved business cards.
Soon enough, he found a card with the title "Manager of Stellar Apparel Inc." Printed dead center in bold lettering was a single name—Mr. Jenson.
He took a deep breath and dialed the number.
As he waited for the call to connect, his heart hammered in his chest, and his fingers squeezed his pen with white-knuckled tension.
Finally, the line picked up.
"Hello, who's this?"
Hearing the voice, Jackson was ecstatic and hurriedly introduced himself. "Director Jenson, hello! This is Jackson James from the James Group. I apologize for the sudden intrusion, but I have a small favor to ask..."
"Sorry, my schedule is completely packed lately. Goodbye."
Realizing the other man was about to hang up, Jackson panicked and blurted out.
