“Director Jenson! Please don't hang up. It's just a small favor. Are you in Harrisburg? If it's convenient, could we grab dinner? I'd love to explain the whole situation to you.”
“I'm sorry. I already told you I don't have the time.”
The voice on the other end was cold and polite before the call abruptly ended.
Jackson James had hit a wall twice now, and his expression was downright ugly. It seemed his only option left was to have Shirley beg Norris for help. He could only hope that Norris would do the James family one last favor for saving his life.
Meanwhile, at The White Group headquarters.
Norris White sat at the head of the conference table, listening to the department directors give their reports. With the sunlight casting a halo behind him, he radiated an untouchable, commanding presence.
Aaron was taking the meeting minutes when he glanced up and noticed the screen of the phone resting in front of Norris light up. Even though the number wasn't saved, Aaron recognized it instantly. He had answered it several times already.
“Mr. White, the James family is calling,” Aaron noted.
Norris didn't even spare the screen a glance. His handsome face remained indifferent. “Block them.”
Every ounce of gratitude had been repaid. There was no need to maintain any further contact.
Aaron hid a smile. This was long overdue! The James family's behavior was completely classless. Besides, after Norris had helped the Gates Group recently, The White Group's overseas orders had been inexplicably intercepted, leaving several board members deeply dissatisfied with Norris. Aaron had worried that the James family would eventually drag Norris down. Hearing his boss draw a clean line was a massive relief. Even the air in the room felt fresher.
Back at the James residence, the atmosphere was suffocatingly gloomy.
“Dad, Norris didn't answer. He blocked me,” Shirley said, looking at Jackson with tearful, innocent eyes as she tried to distance herself from the blame. “I think he's still angry about us using the White family's influence to collect those kickbacks.”
Despite her anxiety, she felt a flare of resentment toward Norris. How could a grown man hold such a petty grudge against her?
Jackson's chest tightened. “I told you all to keep quiet about that! Now The James Group is in trouble, and Norris won't help. What am I supposed to do? Sell the mansion and my shares?”
Shirley didn't dare respond.
Harriet quickly stepped in to soothe him. “Honey, please don't be angry. Shirley and I never expected this either. It's all that wretched Rebecca's fault. If that girl hadn't investigated us behind our backs, Norris would have never found out. I told you she was a snake in the grass, but you didn't believe me. Now you see her true colors.”
Jackson's anger shifted. “Don't even mention her. The company's issues are already driving me up the wall. Now Norris won't take our calls. How are we supposed to apologize and make peace?”
