“Look at her. She's gorgeous. I think she's even prettier than the Campus Belle, Paulina,” someone whispered.
“Wait, isn't that Rebecca? The one who had that rumor with the president? Sure, she has a pretty face, but she's completely useless otherwise.”
“No way. I heard she broke Neely's fitness record on her first day. She even beat up those guys who mocked her in the cafeteria. She must be tough.”
“Please, this is a university, not a fight club. Being tough means nothing.”
“I still think she's amazing. As a freshman, she passed the written exam on her first try and earned a spot in the Apex Academy re-examination. It took me two years just to make it this far.”
“Yeah, and I heard she wanted to turn in her test early but wasn't allowed, so she just slept through half the exam before bothering to write.”
“Seriously? That's way too arrogant. She was testing against Class A! Magee took first place by a landslide last year, beating Paulina by thirty points. In a high-stakes competition like that, she had the nerve to sleep? Where does she get off?”
“If you ask me, she's not that smart. She just knows how to use her... advantages. And I think we all know what those are.”
“Shh! Keep your voice down. You want to get written up?”
“Exactly. Wade Lane is a titan in the research industry. He would never compromise his morals. Stop spreading rumors before it blows up in your face.”
Rebecca heard every word, but she didn't care. Results dictated respect. Once the exam was over, the gossip would shatter on its own.
“Hey, it's Magee and Paulina!” someone suddenly announced.
Heads snapped toward the entrance, faces lighting up with envious smiles.
“Magee is incredible. He's Wade's great-nephew, he's rich, strikingly handsome, and so charismatic,” a girl swooned.
“Paulina is just as amazing. She was the only one to make the cut for The Grand Resonance. A girl as perfect as her is the only one who deserves Magee.”
Knowing a good show was brewing, Rebecca smirked and went back to her game.
Magee originally wanted to sit away from Paulina, but the hall was packed. With no other open seats, he was forced to sit beside her. Naturally, this sent the rumor mill into overdrive.
Magee felt a prickle of annoyance. He respected Paulina's talents, but he certainly wasn't romantically interested in her. His gaze wandered aimlessly until it landed on the corner of the room. There, bathed in soft light, was Rebecca. She was staring at her phone, a relaxed, almost gentle smile on her lips. For some reason, he couldn't look away.
Paulina was soaking in the admiration and flattery from the room when she noticed she was holding an extra number tag. She quickly offered it to him. “Here's your tag, Magee.”
He didn't respond.
Confused, she followed his line of sight. Just as she was about to pinpoint what he was staring at, Magee snapped out of his daze and took the tag. “Thanks.”
Paulina subtly glanced back at the corner, her eyes instantly locking onto Rebecca, who somehow commanded the room's gravity without even trying.
