The Coma Prince’s Fiancée novel Chapter 17

Sophia couldn’t believe how quickly someone had bought her throwaway comment and then rushed off to mock Rebecca. She gently grabbed Paulina’s arm, stopping her from jumping in with an explanation. She whispered, “Paulina, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Just watch. This is about to get good.”

It was obvious Rebecca wasn’t about to let herself get pushed around by someone basically begging for attention. She lifted her chin and said, her voice calm, “Shirley, honestly, you shouldn’t flaunt that level of intelligence. If someone waves attention at you, you lunge for it every time.”

Shirley’s eyes flashed with rage. “Are you calling me a dog?”

Rebecca just smiled, looking bored. “Did I say that? Sounds like you said it yourself.”

“You—!” Shirley’s face froze, so angry she was practically shaking.

Nash finally stepped in between them, glaring at Rebecca. “That’s enough, Rebecca. I’m the one who ended things. There’s no need to take it out on Shirley. And anyway, it was you who made me think all these years that you saved me, not her. Shirley’s put up with so much because of that. Even now, she cares about you. If you keep humiliating her, you’re just making yourself look bad.”

Shirley melted under Nash’s defense, her heart doing cartwheels, but she still played the delicate victim, leaning against Nash’s arm and saying in her softest voice, “Nash, don’t blame Rebecca. She probably didn’t have a choice. I mean, her real parents can barely put food on the table. Rebecca grew up rich, so it’s understandable she’d have trouble adjusting...”

Nash looked at her as if his heart ached. “Shirley, you’re just too kind. That’s why people take advantage of you.”

Shirley blushed demurely and shot Rebecca a smug look, basking in her moment.

Rebecca saw right through her, but didn’t bother to react, keeping her half-smile as if to say she’d seen it all before.

Shirley quickly sized up Paulina and Sophia. She didn’t know them, but their handbags were those exclusive ones she’d never been able to buy. They had to be from powerful families. Shirley’s mind started to turn. Trying to act casual, she piped up, “Rebecca, now that you’ve got this new job as a housekeeper, you really can’t go back to your old ways. We were patient with your personality, but other families might not be.”

Rebecca just laughed under her breath. “What are you trying to say?”

Shirley sighed, looking all innocent. “I just mean… you’re used to living in comfort, but you have to earn money properly. Don’t go making mistakes.”

She glanced over at Paulina and Sophia, making it seem like she was protecting Rebecca’s dignity by not being too specific. She left just enough unsaid for their imaginations to go wild.

It worked instantly—Sophia couldn’t help herself. “What’s that supposed to mean? Did Rebecca do something shady when she was at your place?”

Shirley was secretly thrilled and started to spin her story. “She—”

Before she could finish, Rebecca cut in, sounding bored, “Rebecca’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “If you’re fishing for dirt, you’re going to be disappointed. The only thing I ever did at the James house was survive you.”
