Was he threatening her?
Rebecca’s eyes went cold. The last thing she could tolerate was being threatened. “Who lied to you? Let me say it again. I told you back then, I wasn’t the one who saved you. You were the one chasing after me, insisting we get engaged.”
Nash felt like something heavy just landed in his chest under her icy stare. He’d met plenty of big shots since becoming the chosen heir to The Gates Group, but none of them ever made him feel this pressured. He knew deep down that what Rebecca said was true. He was the one who had wanted the engagement, hoping the James family’s influence could finally change his father’s opinion about him.
He really couldn't afford for anyone to look too closely at the situation.
If only Rebecca could be softer—more like Shirley: gentle, understanding, someone who knew when to let a man save face and back out gracefully. Then maybe he wouldn’t sound so harsh. But Rebecca, who had nothing, always acted so arrogant and sharp-tongued. What gave her the right?
Shirley, clearly worried Rebecca would bring up the video, hurried to smooth things over with a benevolent look. “Nash, just let it go. Whatever happened is in the past, so don’t bring it up anymore. It’s fine, whatever Rebecca says. I believe you.”
“You’re right, Shirley. No point lowering myself for someone like her,” Nash snorted.
Shirley clung to his arm as they all but ran from the room.
Rebecca watched them leave, a faintly mocking smile on her lips. She had no plans to tell Nash who Shirley really was. Nash wasn’t any better, so why bother helping him? Still… suddenly, Rebecca changed her mind about letting the past sleep.
If she could lift Nash up, she could knock him back down.
Across the room, Sophia’s voice floated over, dripping with sarcasm. “Wow, I thought Harrisburg would be boring, but I’ve already heard some wild gossip on my first day. Rebecca, what do you think will happen if Madonna and Fabian find out you’re such a shameless liar? Will they still want you?”
Not just a liar, but also dumped… so embarrassing.
Paulina had planned to stay silent, but Sophia’s words hit right where it hurt. Her parents treated her well now, but years of emotional distance were impossible to ignore. Even Harriet and Jackson, who had watched her grow up, had believed the rumors without asking her.
She couldn’t risk it.
When Rebecca’s frosty gaze landed on them, both Sophia and Paulina shivered.
