"Fine. Since you asked so nicely, I'll bring Mom over tonight."
After hanging up, she told Harriet the news.
Harriet lit up with excitement. "I bet Aaron told Mr. White how those women tried to push us around. That’s probably why Mr. White put them in their place. Otherwise, they would never have apologized so quickly."
She grabbed Shirley’s hand, grinning. "Seriously, it's all you, Shirley. If you hadn’t stepped up to claim credit for helping Mr. White before anyone else, we’d never have a day like this. We finally get to hold our heads high!"
Even though they sat in their own car, Shirley tensed up a little. Her mom always spoke her mind, but this time was risky. "Mom, just keep that to yourself, okay? Don’t repeat it out loud."
Harriet realized and quickly gave the driver a warning not to mention a word of this to anyone.
...
Rebecca had been exhausted all day and was ready to crawl into bed early. The second her head hit the pillow, her phone started ringing again.
With an annoyed sigh, she yanked the blanket over her head, hoping the noise would go away.
But whoever was calling seemed determined to get through.
Call after call, like they were doing it just to mess with her.
Finally, Rebecca gave in. She sat up and glanced at her phone. When she saw Odom’s name on the screen, her whole expression iced over.
"You better have a really good reason for bothering me, or else..."
Odom sounded cheerful, completely unfazed by her tone. "Rebecca, I’m in Harrisburg now. I sent you my location. Aren’t you heading off to that lockdown school program soon? I came all this way just to see you before you disappear. You can’t just blow me off!"
Rebecca didn’t even hesitate. "No. Not interested."
Her finger hovered over the end call button, but Odom must have seen it coming. He jumped in right away.
"Don’t hang up, wait! I brought some news from Elysian Fields Medical. Can’t talk about it on the phone. You really sure you don’t want to hear it in person? Oh, and I brought you a surprise too..."
Elysian Fields Medical?
