Rebecca seamlessly brushed aside the interruption. “Let’s get back to business.”
Odom could tell from her tone that she wasn’t ready to take Neely on as her right-hand man, at least not yet. With a quiet sigh, he sent Neely away on some errand, then turned to Rebecca and brought up the fire at Aurelia Clinic.
“Rebecca, the hospital’s records were all destroyed in the fire, but after asking around, I managed to find something. The clerk in charge of those files now works as an archive manager at Vantage Point University. When you go there, be careful. I’ve got a bad feeling about that place.”
Rebecca was surprised to hear that the university she’d only recently decided to attend was somehow connected to that old fire. This… was interesting. She’d have to move up her enrollment.
“Noted,” she replied.
After dinner, Odom insisted on driving Rebecca back to her hotel. She gave in, not really in the mood to argue.
As Odom held the door open for her, they both heard Paulina’s voice close by.
“We’ll leave it to Shirley, then. Here’s a small thank-you gift. Please take it,” Paulina said.
With Sophia beside her, Paulina politely handed over a check, expressing her gratitude yet again.
The second Harriet saw the amount, her eyes lit up. She nodded quickly, looking more than pleased. “Don’t worry. If Shirley speaks up, Mr. White will definitely help out.”
The restaurant’s split-level layout and their spot on the upper floor happened to give Odom a clear view of Paulina’s group in the hallway. He recognized Harriet and Shirley right away and immediately exchanged a look with Rebecca.
“Rebecca, we know these people,” he murmured.
Rebecca walked over without missing a beat, arriving just as Shirley carefully slipped the check into her purse. Rebecca recognized the check. Twenty million—Sophia’s “wedding gift,” the money meant for Jennifer.
Odom, who knew the Jameses’ taste for luxury all too well, leaned toward Rebecca and whispered, “Rebecca, is the Mr. White they’re talking about… Norris?”
Rebecca nodded.
Odom’s eyes widened. “Harriet and Shirley are always trying to act classy, so why would they cash in a life-saving favor from Norris for ‘pocket money’? That makes Norris seem like he’s on sale or something.”
Rebecca shot him a cool glance. “That pocket money? It’s twenty million.”
“Twenty million? Who even has pocket money like that?” Odom looked genuinely shocked. “What can’t you do with that kind of cash? Why hand it to Harriet and Shirley? If things go south, they’ll have no one to blame.”
Rebecca felt the same way. Even if Sophia wasn’t thinking straight, Paulina was too sharp to miss something like this. Unless… Paulina still had a trick or two up her sleeve.
