“Sophia!”
Paulina’s heart sank the moment she heard Sophia boast like that. There was no time to stop her, and now all she could do was try to patch things up the best she could.
“Mrs. James, Sophia’s just kidding around. Please don’t take her seriously. This money’s literally everything we have. If it weren’t for a family elder who urgently needs Ambrosia Vitae, we would have never come all the way to Harrisburg or spent so much. So, please, we really need your help.”
Maybe, on any other day, her words would have worked.
But after Sophia had called the money pocket change, and sounded way too convincing, both Harriet and Shirley had completely bought it.
Harriet gave a fake smile, her eyes not matching her lips. “You may say that, but Mr. White isn’t just anybody. Even for Shirley, getting him to help won’t be easy. If he gets annoyed, Shirley’s the one who’ll have to deal with it. So, let’s treat this twenty million as a first payment. When it’s all done, you’ll give us another twenty million. Deal?”
“You can’t be serious…”
Sophia couldn’t believe her nerve, and she was about to let her have it, but Paulina cut in quickly.
“No problem, but that’s a lot of money. We’ll need a bit of time to pull it together. And we’re not paying the second half until we see the medicine.”
Harriet hadn’t expected her little test to actually work, but at that, she grinned like she’d won the lottery. “Great, then we have a deal.”
With that, she dragged Shirley off downstairs, so fast you’d think she was scared Sophia and Paulina would change their minds and snatch the check back.
Neely, who’d been silent till now, couldn’t help whispering, “Odom, are those two girls for real? The other side just asked, and they handed over twenty million?”
Odom looked almost pained. “I know. Why can’t I ever meet girls like that?”
Rebecca’s lips turned up in a cold, dry smile. “With your IQ, it’s better you don’t. You’d get played so badly you wouldn’t realize it until the bill arrived.”
“What plan could you possibly have? That’s forty million! Even my mom couldn’t raise that much cash in one go! It’s easy for you to promise when you’re not the one on the line. I can’t believe I trusted you, and now you’re siding with outsiders to hurt me. When we get back, I’m telling Fabian everything, and then you’re on your own!”
Paulina was stunned. She hadn’t expected Sophia to blow up at her without even listening. The polite smile she wore dropped away in an instant.
She grabbed Sophia, not letting her storm off, her voice suddenly cold. “Can you at least let me finish before you go off on me? I only agreed to what they asked, but that doesn’t mean I actually intend to pay an extra twenty million. Besides, once Mr. White agrees to help, do you think Harriet and Shirley will even matter?”
Sophia blinked, some of Paulina’s meaning finally sinking in. “Wait, you mean…”
“I mean, once we’ve got Mr. White’s word, the rest is almost guaranteed. Harriet and Shirley taking money like this isn’t something they’d want to make public, and if we don’t pay up, do you really think they’d dare take it to Mr. White?”
“But even so,” Sophia said, still uneasy, “the Jameses aren’t exactly easy to deal with. If we cheat them out of the money and they start a feud, Fabian will hear about it. We’ll be the ones getting burned.”
