“Rebecca, fancy seeing you here.”
Shirley glanced at Rebecca, who was the last to walk in, arm in arm with Ableson. There was a little gleam of pride in Shirley’s eyes.
Rebecca lifted her chin, her lips curling with the hint of a smirk. “What a surprise. Why are you two here? Don’t tell me you’ve come to talk someone out of trouble?”
The mood of the room shifted immediately. Harriet, Shirley, Paulina, and Sophia all exchanged stunned, uneasy glances.
Harriet, never one to let things slide, put on her stern elder voice. “Is that any way to speak? Shirley and I don’t use favors like bargaining chips. Don’t forget, Mr. White invited us himself today. Otherwise, we wouldn’t dare show up unannounced.”
Rebecca’s brows rose just a fraction. So it was Norris who asked them to come?
Ableson caught the tension and jumped in before things got worse. He smiled at Rebecca, his voice casual. “Norris invited Mrs. James and Shirley today. Please, everyone, take a seat. I’ll ask someone to bring tea.”
Rebecca noticed there was no explanation for the invitation, but she didn’t bother to dig deeper. She headed straight for an armchair off to the side and was about to settle in.
“Rebecca, aren’t you sitting in the wrong spot?” someone called out.
Rebecca ignored them. She lowered herself into the chair, adjusted her posture, crossed her long legs, and looked up, her tone light. “What exactly is wrong with this spot?”
Shirley’s voice softened into practiced concern. “Rebecca, this is the White family’s house. You can’t just make yourself comfortable wherever. Besides, Ms. Adams and Ms. Russell haven’t even sat down yet. Maybe you’re being a little too forward?”
The remark made everyone pause. Suddenly, they all seemed to remember the pecking order.
Sophia couldn’t help hiding a grin. She couldn’t believe a joke she’d made earlier about Rebecca being the “help” was still doing some damage. Rebecca really was like bad luck, always managing to annoy people wherever she went.
