When Ableson heard the crash behind him, he whipped around. Normally, nothing rattled him, but right now he looked like he’d seen a ghost.

Shirley’s shriek cut through the room, drowning out even Ableson’s shout.

Sophia and Paulina stared, wide-eyed, as the maid lunged with the tray of tea, spilling it straight at Rebecca. That tea was still steaming hot.

Neither of them thought Rebecca stood a chance of dodging it.

But in the next instant, Rebecca, who’d been lounging on the sofa with her legs crossed, suddenly pushed off the armrest. She moved in one clean, sharp motion—leaning back and hooking the tray with her foot just enough to knock the cup away from her body.

The cup hit the floor with a loud crash, tea spraying in every direction.

Rebecca managed to angle her kick so the cup wouldn’t hit anyone. But Shirley, desperate to see Rebecca embarrassed, had leaned in a little too close. The scalding tea splashed across her hand.

Everyone was still in shock, replaying Rebecca’s crazy-fast escape, when Shirley’s scream made them all jump.

“My hand, it’s burning!”

Shirley leaped up from her seat, grabbing her wrist, the back of her hand already turning bright red.

Harriet nearly lost it when she saw. “Water, someone get some cold water! Hurry!”

Ableson jumped into action, telling the staff to bring ice water right away.

Upstairs, Norris was coming down in the elevator from his study. The sounds from the main hall made his normally indifferent eyes narrow. He turned to Aaron. “What happened?”

“I’ll find out.”

When Aaron arrived, he saw a servant dashing out of the kitchen, balancing a huge bowl of ice water. Aaron stopped him. “Why are you running? Have you forgotten how to behave?”

The servant spotted Norris, who was sitting in his wheelchair with a calm, distant look, and bowed quickly. “Norris, Shirley just got burned. She needs ice for the pain so I was…”
