The Coma Prince’s Fiancée novel Chapter 45

“Sophia, what are you saying!”

Paulina had known all along that Sophia was impulsive and stubborn, but she never dreamed Sophia would actually spill the truth about giving Harriet and Shirley money right in front of Norris. In the past, Sophia might have tried to laugh it off or smooth things over, but Harriet and Shirley had pushed her too far. They took her money and then refused to help, and that alone was enough to make Sophia furious. The money was supposed to save her. She couldn’t find it in her to defend those two, so all her anger turned on Paulina.

“Paulina, tell me I’m wrong. Weren’t you there last night when she agreed to help us? You’re not really going to side with outsiders over your own friend, are you?”

Paulina froze, caught off guard by the accusation. If she admitted it, what would Mr. White think of her? If she denied it, it’d be pointless because everyone had already drawn their own conclusions. Before, people just thought Shirley was clueless and rude, but now, hearing she’d taken money from the Russells with no intention of following through, everyone started looking at her with outright disgust.

Ableson, who had been silent, finally shook off his shock. He stared at Sophia, completely confused. “Sophia, if you needed something, why wouldn’t you just ask Norris? Why pay Shirley to help?”

That was what everyone else was thinking too. The Russells and the Whites had been friends for generations. Why go out of their way to look for help from the James family, of all people?

Paulina, worried that Sophia would blurt something even worse, quickly grabbed her arm and jumped in before she could say anything else. “Ableson, it’s not what you think. We barely know Harriet and Shirley. Why would we ask them for help? Sophia’s just talking nonsense, please don’t take her seriously, really, don’t…”

Harriet knew right away this was a disaster waiting to happen. If Norris found out the James family had been using his name to scam money off people, there would be hell to pay. She hurried to back Paulina up. “Exactly, the James family is doing fine. Why would we need to take anyone’s money?”

But the way they tried to deny it just made it more obvious they were lying. Everyone could see it.

Rebecca, who had suspected their little plot for a while, finally decided it was time to jump in. “I’m not so sure about that.”
