At this point, it was crystal clear to anyone watching that something shady was going on.
The silence was awkward, but Rebecca had never been one to keep quiet when drama was brewing. She fixed her gaze on the group, her voice sharp and direct. “Seriously? Are you out of your mind? You actually paid them to help? Did you really hand over the cash or did they scam it out of you?”
That one line made Harriet, Shirley, and Sophia all stiffen like they'd been caught red-handed.
Harriet snapped, her tone defensive. “What nonsense are you spewing? We didn’t scam anyone!”
Sophia usually thought Rebecca could be a bit harsh, but right now, she didn’t care. She raised her voice, glaring at Harriet.
“Is she wrong? You took my money and did nothing. In my book, that’s a scam. Give the check back right now or this isn’t over. Don’t forget, your little family isn’t in a position to threaten mine.”
Harriet could feel her face burning. It was humiliating to be called out so loudly by someone younger, right in front of everyone.
Shirley couldn’t believe Sophia was being this bold, yelling at her mom like that, especially with Norris standing right there. She quickly turned to Norris, looking for support.
“Mr. White, no matter how upset she is, my mom is still her elder. Isn’t it a bit much for her to talk that way, right in front of you?”
Finally, Norris spoke, expression cold and unreadable.
“Shirley, whatever arrangements you made in private, that’s your business. But if you really did cheat her, I suggest you return the money—immediately.”
Harriet had hoped Norris would side with her, considering everything her family had done for him. Hearing him say that, her stomach dropped.
Sophia, emboldened with Norris on her side, stood taller and raised her voice even more.
Harriet caught on to this too, and you could see the tension melting from her face, mixed with a little of that “barely escaped disaster” disbelief.
Just then, Rebecca’s cool gaze drifted across the room. Her comment seemed light, almost careless, but it cut right through the atmosphere.
“You might want to double-check what you just got back so easily. Never know if someone swapped it out.”
The words seemed to pluck at the last taut nerve in Harriet’s chest. Paulina stared at Rebecca, wide-eyed. Was this just a lucky guess, or did Rebecca know more than she let on?
Sophia suddenly felt uneasy. She knew there’d been talk of swapping the check, but she hadn’t been told exactly when it would happen. And honestly, she couldn’t tell the difference between a real check and a fake one anyway.
So now, as she looked down at the check in her hand, one question echoed in her mind… was this one real, or not?
