“Paulina.”
Sophia reached out, almost on instinct, looking for Paulina to help her. Paulina, clearly worried that Sophia would only make things worse, spoke up fast. “Just give me the check!”
Sophia didn’t waste a second. She handed it over, but before she could even let go, a pale, almost porcelain hand appeared between them and snatched the check away.
“Rebecca, give it back!” Sophia realized she was holding air and immediately tried to grab for it, but Rebecca just shifted to the side, neatly avoiding her.
Paulina watched Rebecca’s fingers trace over the check, and a sinking feeling settled in her stomach. Trying hard to hide her panic, especially with Norris watching, she forced herself to stay calm.
“Rebecca, you’ve probably never used a check before, right? How could you even tell if it’s real or fake? Why not just let me see it? I can check it for you.”
Rebecca didn’t even look her way.
Everyone’s eyes were glued to Rebecca as she lightly ran her fingers over the paper. For a moment, the entire living room was so quiet that it felt like no one dared to breathe.
Nobody actually knew how much was written on the check, but it was obvious that it had to be a massive amount for Paulina and Sophia to be so anxious.
Then, Paulina noticed Rebecca’s white fingertips pause on a long string of numbers. She blurted out, “Rebecca, you…”
Rebecca’s eyes drifted past her without much interest and settled on Sophia. “It’s fake,” she said, as if commenting on the weather.
Those two words landed like a splash of cold water, making Harriet, Shirley, and Sophia’s hearts all race at once.
Shirley recovered fast. “That’s impossible! I’ve had this check in my bag from the start. I never did anything to it. How could it be fake?”
Paulina just stared, overwhelmed and confused. It couldn’t be fake. Everything had happened so fast, she never even had the chance to swap it for a phony. This one had to be real.
Harriet’s face twisted with disbelief. She pointed at Rebecca. “You’re lying! There’s no way it’s fake. You must be making this up!”
Paulina and Sophia tensed up as Steven took the check from Rebecca. He glanced down, and as soon as he saw the number, his eyebrows shot up. “Twenty million?” he said, almost in awe.
Everyone in the room went silent all over again.
Even Ableson, who’d been with the Whites for decades and thought he’d seen it all, was stunned. Aaron, who was just an employee, nearly rolled his eyes. Two million dollars? That was more money than most people would ever see in a lifetime—and Sophia was trying to buy off Harriet and Shirley with it. How could anyone be that clueless?
The shock in the room was contagious. Harriet, Shirley, Paulina, and Sophia all grew visibly anxious, sneaking glances at Norris, desperate to see if he’d noticed anything wrong. Seeing Norris’s calm expression, they finally let out a silent breath of relief.
Thank goodness. Mr. White hadn’t caught on.
Steven took his time examining the check. But out of the corner of his eye, he watched as panic swept over the other four, his smile growing wider. “Honestly, this check really does look fake.”
The words seemed to echo through the room. Harriet and Shirley both went pale, the shock written all over their faces.
