When Irvin Russell caught sight of her, his cool, distant look melted a little. His usually sharp features softened, the curve of his mouth relaxing, and a gentle warmth slipped into his eyes.
He had known Paulina since they were kids. They’d basically grown up side by side for eighteen years, and he’d always looked out for her.
“Irvin, you’ve been overseas for so long. You’re not leaving again anytime soon, right?” Paulina’s voice came out soft and sweet.
After Irvin started med school, he kept flying off to other countries for volunteer work. Sometimes he’d be gone half a year, sometimes a whole year. In the past, it hadn’t bothered her much. But now with their parents totally focused on Rebecca, she really needed Irvin in her corner.
Irvin’s lips pulled into a smile. “Yeah, I’ve got things to handle now that I’m back. Looks like I’ll be staying home for the rest of the year.”
“That’s amazing!” Paulina grinned, her eyes lighting up.
Irvin was the one she’d always been closest to. With him here, she felt sure she could turn the whole mess around. Maybe she’d even knock Rebecca down a bit.
Catching Rebecca glancing their way, Paulina’s eyes sparkled with a smug little pride. She looped her arm through Irvin’s, leading him over. “Irvin, Rebecca’s back. I’ll introduce you.”
Truthfully, Irvin had noticed the girl his mom was fussing over the second he walked in. Randy had described Rebecca before, but seeing her in person still caught him off guard. She was gorgeous.
Except Rebecca barely looked at him, her gaze so cool it was like he was just some random passerby.
Was she still upset about him getting Randy to test her?
“Rebecca. I’m Irvin,” he said, offering a hand. “I’m your brother.”
Rebecca nodded politely, but her voice was distant. “Nice to meet you. I'm Rebecca.”
Paulina watched all of this with envy eating at her. It felt like her heart was being scratched up from the inside.
When things calmed down, Irvin turned to Fabian, who looked furious, and to Jennifer and Sophia, who both shrank back like scared birds. His friendly expression instantly faded. “Mom, what’s Jennifer doing now? I heard something about favoritism and someone’s life. What’s actually going on?”
As soon as Madonna started talking about this, any trace of a smile vanished from her face. She let him in on everything Jennifer and Sophia had pulled, leaving nothing out.
At the end, she added, “Rebecca got their money back for them. Instead of being grateful, Jennifer and Sophia wanted to spread rumors about Rebecca not respecting her elders. That’s why your dad told them to get out and banned them from coming back.”
Irvin’s face got darker with every word.
Paulina thought about defending Jennifer, but when she saw how angry Irvin looked, she wisely kept quiet.
