Before Sophia could react, Fabian’s voice boomed through the room. “Madonna and I have let you get away with too much. Look what that's done. You can’t even stand your own niece.”

His gaze swept over them, his tone colder than ever. “Since that’s how you feel, you’re leaving the Russell house today. Don’t set foot back here unless I say you can. Someone, show them out.”

“Fabian, you’re really picking Rebecca over my mom? She’s your only sister!” Sophia’s voice trembled. She just couldn’t believe he would do this.

Paulina piped up before anyone else could speak. “Dad, Jennifer’s still sick. You went out of your way to find her a specialist, remember? If you turn your back on her, who else will care?”

Fabian turned away, completely ignoring them. Madonna only looked at Paulina for a long moment, her eyes shadowed, but she said nothing.

Jennifer had never seen Fabian this harsh before. He’d always had a soft spot for her. Maybe the hospital was right—her time really was running out. With her future so uncertain, she had just one job left, and that was making sure Sophia would live easy for the rest of her life.

If begging didn’t work, maybe desperation would.

Her eyes flicked to the stone pillar just behind her, then to the house staff moving in. Her voice cracked as she forced out, “Fabian, if you don’t think of me as family anymore, then I don’t have much to live for. Just promise me you’ll look after Sophia, okay?”

And without warning, Jennifer threw herself toward the stone column.

“Mom!” Sophia screamed, frozen in fear.

Fabian’s face paled. “Jennifer! Stop her, somebody!”

The servants rushed in, grabbing Jennifer just in time.

Sophia lost it. She clung to her mother, sobbing like a scared little girl. “Mom, what were you thinking? If anything happened to you, what would I do?”
