Sophia always felt uneasy around Irvin. When he smiled, he could come off gentle, but when his face was blank, he was honestly terrifying.
She spoke in a hushed tone, “Irvin, it really wasn’t just our fault tonight. If Rebecca hadn’t refused to help me at the beginning, none of this would have happened. And….” She looked over at Paulina, remembering how much Irvin cared about her, and hurried to add, “Paulina ended up dragged into this mess too. Not only did Fabian scold her, now she’s being punished to reflect on her mistakes. This all started with Rebecca!”
Irvin didn’t respond right away. Instead, he turned and faced Paulina. “Paulina, is that true?”
Paulina felt a flare of annoyance. Sophia was throwing her under the bus. Still, she kept her tone calm and reasonable. “Irvin, Rebecca and I both made mistakes. Dad already gave me a piece of his mind, and looking back, he was right. I acted carelessly and caused problems. I didn’t do a good job looking after my sisters.”
Back then, whenever she took the blame like this, Irvin would always drop his anger and try to comfort her first thing. But today wasn’t like before. He just nodded approvingly. “Admitting your mistakes is important. I’m glad you didn’t waste the chances you’ve been given.”
Paulina stared at him, completely thrown off. She froze, honestly not sure what to say.
Irvin barely glanced at her again and shifted his attention to Jennifer and Sophia. “Paulina understands what she did wrong. Jennifer, what about you two?” He fixed his gaze on Jennifer. “Feeling unwell isn’t an excuse for bossing everyone around. Did you forget what I told you before I left?”
Jennifer’s face lost its color. There was no way she’d forgotten.
Before Irvin left the country, he’d warned her not to stir up trouble at the Russells' house. He’d promised that if she crossed the line, she’d regret it when he got back.
She just hadn’t expected him to come home this soon. Last time, he’d been gone for more than half a year. This time, only three months had passed, and there he was.
She took a shaky breath and leaned into her vulnerability. “Besides, I have breast cancer. I don’t have much time left. In the end, all of this is my fault. My health is failing, and it’s weighed on Sophia. She made mistakes because she was worried and scared for me…”
Fabian’s face softened a little, sympathy creeping in.
But Madonna was unmoved. “Yes, you’re sick, but don’t act like Fabian and I haven’t been there for you. Think about it. Every time something went wrong, every time you felt hurt, weren’t we the first to help? Even for this auction, we had Rebecca go with Sophia, and Fabian made sure the Whites were there to support you. But you allowed Sophia to bully Rebecca again and again. Do you really think you’ve done right by us?”
Jennifer heard the message loud and clear. Everything depended on Rebecca’s forgiveness. Bitterness simmered inside her, but she forced herself to lower her head. “Rebecca, it’s all my fault. I’m sorry, truly. Please don’t hold it against me. I promise I’ll teach Sophia how to behave and keep her from saying the wrong thing ever again.”
