“Mom!” Sophia’s voice trembled with hurt and anger as she stepped forward. “I get apologizing to Madonna and Fabian, but Rebecca? She’s younger than you, and she’s the one who was rude in the first place. Why should we be the ones saying sorry? It’s not right!”
The moment Sophia finished, Jennifer saw Irvin’s face go completely cold.
Worried that Irvin might actually hit Sophia, Jennifer raised her own hand and slapped Sophia before he had a chance.
“Sophia, when will you learn to act your age? Rebecca’s your cousin, and she means everything to Madonna and Fabian. If it weren’t for Rebecca, we might’ve lost that twenty million. Think about that.”
When Paulina heard Madonna and Fabian call Rebecca their precious one, she flinched for a split second. If Rebecca was the favorite, what did that make her?
Sophia, who had been doted on all her life, could hardly believe her own mother—the person who used to protect her no matter what—would hit her in front of everyone.
Humiliated and angry, Sophia’s eyes welled up. “I’m only telling the truth! What did I do wrong? I’ve always looked out for you, but you hit me for someone else? Fine. I’m done. Don’t expect me to care anymore!” Her voice cracked. She shoved past the bodyguards and bolted out of the room.
“Sophia!” Jennifer called after her, heart aching, but she didn’t dare leave yet with the tension still hanging in the air. Instead, she looked pleadingly at Irvin, desperate for his reaction.
Irvin just frowned, his tone flat and cold as ice. “Jennifer, if you keep letting her behave this way, she’s going to get herself into real trouble one day.”
Jennifer nodded over and over, trying to show she understood. Then she turned to Fabian, her voice trembling. “Fabian, please… Just forgive me this once, okay? Sophia is your niece. I don’t have much time left, and after I’m gone, I’ll need you and Madonna to look after her…”
She couldn’t hold back her tears anymore and broke down right there.
No matter how frustrated Fabian felt, watching Jennifer so helpless made it hard to stay mad.
“Alright. Since you know you’ve spoiled Sophia, you should Do a better job parenting her from now on. As for your illness, I’ll do my best to help however I can.”
Still, if her parents didn’t want to drag things out, Rebecca had no reason to press further. If Jennifer kept her distance from now on, Rebecca could look the other way. But if she crossed any more lines, Rebecca wouldn’t hesitate to finish things for good.
“Rebecca, what Jennifer did was over the line. But she’s your father’s only sister, and she’s really sick. He can’t bear to cut her off completely. Don’t let it bother you,” Madonna explained gently, worried her daughter would take it too hard.
Rebecca shook her head. “I understand, Mom. But this is the last time. I won’t let it slide again.”
Madonna’s shoulders relaxed. “Thank you for understanding, sweetheart. I won’t let anything like this happen again either.”
Fabian, relieved that Rebecca wasn’t upset, offered a few simple words of comfort.
Nobody seemed to notice that, somewhere during all this, Paulina had already slipped away.
