In the study, Fabian and Irvin sat across from each other, playing chess and talking quietly. This was how Fabian liked to clear his mind whenever he felt weighed down.
Irvin noticed right away that his dad wasn’t in the best mood, so he started letting Fabian take the lead in the game. With each move, Fabian gradually relaxed, the tension easing from his face as he felt himself gaining ground.
When there were only a few pieces left on the board, Fabian glanced up and said, “Irvin, you’ve changed a lot these last few years. You’re not getting into trouble left and right like you used to. Especially after this trip abroad, you just seem… tougher. Makes your dad pretty happy, you know.”
Irvin picked up a black chess piece and smiled. “People have to grow up sometime. I think I just got lucky you and Mom were so patient with me. You could’ve just kicked me out for all the messes I got into.”
Fabian snorted and gave him a sideways look. “To be honest, I thought about it. But your mom always said, we already have two sons who are doing amazingly well. All she ever wanted for you was that you stay safe and healthy, and she’d be satisfied.”
Irvin laughed. He couldn’t help it. So they never really expected much from him after all?
Fabian set down his teacup. “And another thing. Family should stick together. If we want anything good to come our way, we need unity at home.”
Irvin caught the serious tone and looked over, straight at his dad. “Dad, I get what you’re really saying. Rebecca’s come back now. I’d never treat her badly, not for what happened before. She’s my sister. Why wouldn’t I look out for her?”
Fabian nodded, and for a moment his normally serious face softened when he talked about Rebecca. “Good. Rebecca might seem cold, but she knows what’s right and what’s wrong. Even though life was hard for her with the James family, she never gave up on herself. After what we heard at home, she’s an incredible pianist—good enough to make everyone stop and listen. And she’s willing to go to Vantage Point University for the prep program. I’m proud of her.”
Irvin paused with a chess piece in hand. The look in his eyes turned thoughtful. “But according to what I found out, Rebecca never actually learned piano.”
He knew his people wouldn’t miss something that big. Was Rebecca hiding it on purpose?
