The group didn’t take long to arrive at the mall.
“Madonna, Paulina, Irvin.”
As soon as they stepped out of the car, Sophia approached them in a polished, designer tweed blazer. She stopped in front of them and barely managed a polite hello to Rebecca.
Madonna’s smooth forehead wrinkled the moment she saw Sophia. “Sophia, what are you doing here?”
Sophia, knowing she wasn’t exactly welcome anymore, didn’t have her usual confidence. She spoke quietly, trying to seem obedient.
“Madonna, I have this really important party coming up, but I’m hopeless with fashion. I wanted to ask Paulina to help me pick something out. I heard you were all coming here today, so I waited… But I’m definitely not trying to get free jewelry or anything. I’ll pay for everything myself.”
Paulina jumped in immediately. “Mom, please don’t be mad. Sophia’s really anxious about this, so I just wanted to help her out. Irvin, can you help me talk to Mom? Don’t let her be upset with Sophia.”
Her voice was unusually soft, almost as if she was trying to win her mother over by being cute.
Irvin looked at her for a moment and said nothing. In the past, he might have sided with Sophia, but today he couldn’t agree with how things were handled.
Paulina had felt safe acting first and asking permission later, figuring Irvin would back her up. She hadn’t expected him to just stand there without defending her, and the color drained from her cheeks.
“I’m sorry, Irvin… If you think this isn’t okay, then… then I’ll ask Sophia to leave.”
“Since you’re both here already, just come along,” Madonna said with a sigh. She didn’t like Sophia, but as the adult, she didn’t want to bicker with younger people.
Then she turned to Rebecca, her voice gentle and sweet. “Rebecca, I’ll bring you up to the third floor in a bit. That’s where they keep all the best things. You can pick out whatever you want.”
Sophia, on the other hand, was now someone else’s problem.
Paulina and Sophia exchanged a glance when they heard her mention the third floor.
Lady.M was the star brand up there. It wasn’t quite a household luxury name yet, but with its stylish designs and artsy shop layout, it had become a big deal in the city’s most exclusive malls.
