Rebecca sat quietly in the car. When she heard Wade call her tacky, her hand paused halfway to the window, then dropped back to her lap. Maybe it was better not to ruin whatever image he had of her.
Ablitt didn’t look convinced. “But what if you’re wrong?”
“No way!” Wade waved his hand, eyes quickly fixing on a rusted, battered old van by the curb. The sight made him perk up like he’d just uncovered some hidden treasure. “That’s it. The person I’m looking for has to be in that van.”
Ablitt stared at the van’s flaking paint and felt like everything he thought he knew about life was falling apart.
Nearby, Paulina watched, surprised when she realized Wade wasn’t there for her at all. He headed off with someone else, leaving her behind. Reluctant to let it go, she called out, “Dean Ablitt.”
He heard her and turned back.
He noticed her instantly—and then spotted the striking young man beside her. His smile was friendly. “Paulina. You just got here too? You should head inside so you don’t miss registration.”
Touched by his concern, Paulina returned the smile with practiced grace. “Thank you, Dean Ablitt. I actually heard that President Wade is welcoming a very important guest today. Any idea who it is? Maybe Irvin and I could help with the reception?”
He shifted his attention to Irvin. “It’s great to finally meet you. I’m Ablitt, Dean of Students here at Vantage Point University,” he said, reaching out a hand. “Your reputation for medical skill precedes you. I’ve heard so much, but never had the chance to meet you in person. Truly an honor.”
Rebecca, in the front seat, was caught off guard by how famous Irvin really was. Even a dean was treating him with such respect. Her eyes warmed with quiet admiration.
