Irvin watched Rebecca with a quiet grin, unable to hide his amusement at how laid-back yet confident she looked. He quickly sent the video he’d just recorded to the family group chat, then walked over and handed her a tissue.
“You’ve got some sweat on your forehead. Here, wipe it off.”
“Thanks.” Rebecca accepted the tissue and dabbed her forehead without a second thought.
Irvin handed her a bottle of water and said, “Drink a little, and just catch your breath for a minute.”
Rebecca took the bottle, but she didn’t drink.
Irvin noticed, his smile softening, eyes thoughtful as they watched her.
Meanwhile, Wade, almost giddy, sent the video to his private group chat. When nobody replied after a few seconds, he couldn’t help but type,
[My Bekki is amazing!]
The group had been dead silent, but now everyone jumped in at once.
[Shameless old man, who says she’s yours?]
[I met Rebecca first, so if anything, she’s mine!]
[What are you talking about? Rebecca said herself she loves my cooking. She’d only say that if she’s one of us, right? She clearly belongs in my family!]
[Please. She said she liked my mansion once. If that counts, she should be mine, not yours.]
As the chat went wild, Wade dropped in another line, laid-back as ever.
[She’s right in front of me. You all haven’t even seen her, so what’s the point of arguing?]
His phone blew up instantly with replies, the whole thing buzzing so much it nearly shook out of his hand. Wade, totally unfazed, tucked the phone away and shot Rebecca a proud thumbs-up.
“You’re something else. Make sure to keep doing Vantage Point University proud, so this old man can bask in your glory too.”
Rebecca nodded, her voice calm as ever. “Thank you. I’m going to check in now.”
She took her luggage from Irvin and started walking away, barely looking back.
Everyone else just stared. That was Wade—everyone scrambled to get on his good side—yet Rebecca didn’t seem to care at all. Even weirder, Wade looked pleased as could be, not the least bit bothered by her coolness. Had everything just flipped upside down overnight?
Security at Vantage Point University was strict. Irvin had only gotten in as a special exception and couldn’t go any farther. All he could do was remind Paulina to take care of Rebecca while she settled in.
“Don’t worry, Irvin. I’ll look out for Rebecca,” Paulina promised, her sweet smile hiding the resentment just beneath her skin.
“Thanks for your help the other day. I mean it.”
As she spoke, her cheeks turned pink, and she put some extra space between them, hurrying ahead just a little.
Magee just looked confused. What help? He couldn’t recall doing anything out of the ordinary.
The rest of their group overheard and wasted no time teasing them.
“Oooh, Magee, did you do something romantic for Paulina again? You two are just too cute. Are you finally going to make things official?”
“Seriously, Magee, it’s been three years already. Isn’t it time you and Paulina became a real couple?”
Magee actually liked Paulina, but she’d never accepted him outright and he didn’t want to push. Things between them just stayed in this awkward, undefined place.
He shrugged them off. “Mind your own business.”
Everyone just laughed, louder than before.
...
At the gates of Apex Academy, Rebecca clutched her admission letter. Her face, usually so gentle, now looked absolutely determined as she stared straight ahead at the entrance.
