Meanwhile, at the White estate in Harrisburg, Irvin slid a folder across the table to Norris. “Can you check this for me? Let me know if you spot anything off.”
Steven noticed right away and leaned over, his tone teasing. “You don’t look too thrilled. Don’t tell me you got mixed up with some girl drama in Harrisburg, and now you want Norris to bail you out?”
Irvin’s expression darkened, his good looks shadowed by something heavy. After a moment, he let out a quiet, mocking laugh. “Please, you really think I’d handle things the way you do? At least I can deal with my own mess.”
Steven grinned and turned to Norris for backup. “Hey, Norris, remember a few years back when Irvin suddenly wanted to go to med school? Didn’t he start talking about meeting The One?”
Bringing up the past made Irvin’s eyes narrow, annoyance flickering there. “That was forever ago. How’s that still taking up space in that empty head of yours?”
Steven was clearly having too much fun picking at old wounds. “Doesn’t matter how long ago it was. The point is, it’s been three years and not a single sign of this ‘true love’ of yours. Guess you’re not as capable as you think.”
Irvin shot back, voice cold. “And what about you? Chased all over town by girls you can’t handle. That’s supposed to be impressive?”
“Enough.” Norris cut in, frowning. He glanced over the pile of paperwork, then fixed Irvin with a calm, pale stare. “Why are you even looking into your sister?”
The Russells were always thorough. It wasn’t like them to double-check something, especially after all this time. What was the point in digging up Rebecca’s history now?
Steven finally noticed the name on the folder. His face twisted in mock disgust. “Wait, are you guys thinking about kicking her out or something? Just so you know, if that’s the case, I’ll take her off your hands, and I won’t be polite about it.”
He still remembered the way Rebecca had put Paulina, Sophia, Harriet, and Shirley in their place. That fiery spirit? Definitely his type.
Irvin almost jumped up from the couch. “What kind of nonsense are you spouting? She’s my sister. I’m warning you, back off or you’ll have to answer to me.”
Irvin leaned into the chair and let out a sigh. “My mentor wants me to meet Wade, give him an update on something.”
Norris had heard that Wade was now the president of Vantage Point University. “So, what do you want me to do?”
It didn’t take long for Irvin to get to the point. After being friends for so long, there was no need to sugarcoat anything. “The Russells don’t have any contacts with Wade. I was hoping you could introduce me. You know him better than I do.”
“Sure,” Norris agreed. “I’ll let you know when I hear back from him.”
Irvin hung around the Whites’ place for a while longer before he finally took off.
