**Chasing Light, Finding Peace** – by Rohan Verma
Could Autumn truly possess all the answers?
This unsettling notion flickered through Mars Wright’s mind, igniting a tempest of anxiety within him.
Had he not been gripping the steering wheel with such intensity, he might have found himself nervously wringing his hands or tugging at his hair in sheer frustration.
Autumn Lopez observed him intently, noting the frantic way his eyes flitted away from her, the beads of perspiration that gathered on his brow. A profound contempt began to simmer within her.
For someone as cowardly as Mars, he certainly had the audacity to betray her trust, orchestrating a deceitful dance with her own sister right before her very eyes.
A fresh wave of regret crashed over Autumn. If she hadn’t placed her unwavering trust in that scoundrel and that backstabbing sister of hers, would those two lowlifes ever have found a way to entangle themselves? How had they managed to shroud their betrayal from her for so long?
The realization that they had squandered her trust, that they had toyed with her emotions, ignited a fierce desire within Autumn to unleash her fury upon them, to tear them apart for their treachery.
Those who dare to break your heart deserve a special kind of torment. Lydia, the brazen homewrecker, deserved nothing less than a sharp slap across the face, while Mars, the lecherous fiend who couldn’t keep his desires in check, warranted a thorough beating.
“Autumn?”
Mars had been waiting for what felt like an eternity, though in reality, it had only been a fleeting minute.
He longed to confront her directly, to voice the turmoil within him, but fear held him captive.
What if the truth he had so meticulously concealed came crashing down around him? The very thought sent shivers down his spine. He was acutely aware that Autumn had zero tolerance for betrayal. Once the facade crumbled, he would be left utterly humiliated, exposed for the coward he was.
What both fascinated and frustrated Mars about Autumn was her undeniable competence.
He was genuinely apprehensive that if this situation escalated, Cloudbreak Corporation would be thrust into a crisis of monumental proportions.
He knew, deep down, that he could never match her capabilities.
If the company faltered, he would find himself completely adrift, unable to navigate the storm.
He may have projected an image of control in front of Lydia and the Lopez family, but only the one who has wronged you understands the depth of that betrayal.
And as someone who had always ridden on her coattails, Mars was painfully aware of how much he relied on her.
But that very dependency was the reason for his infidelity.
He craved a partner like Lydia, someone who would look to him for everything, who would see him as her entire universe.
Not a formidable woman who eclipsed him at every turn, radiating her own dazzling light.
As these thoughts swirled in his mind, a surge of self-righteousness began to swell within him.
So I cheated. Is Autumn entirely innocent in this?
In fact, isn’t she partly to blame, as my wife?
He convinced himself that even if their relationship spiraled into a courtroom battle, he would have a leg to stand on.
Yet, deep down, he comprehended that Autumn would never take it that far.
He felt a surge of misplaced confidence. He had been so careful, so secretive. How could she possibly know the truth?
“I’m listening,” he said, his voice a mix of bravado and trepidation.
Autumn studied him as his expression morphed from one of panic to a slow, stubborn resolve.
Knowing him as intimately as she did, she surmised that he had spent the last few moments reconstructing his own moral compass, desperately seeking to justify his actions.
He was merely trying to soothe his own conscience, crafting excuses for his betrayal.
After years of shared experiences, Autumn had come to know Mars all too well.
And she was profoundly disillusioned by him.
If he possessed even a fragment of a conscience, he should be drowning in remorse right now.
Yet, he wasn’t.
Instead, he seemed to grow more defiant.
Fine. If this is how it’s going to be, there’s nothing more to discuss.
Between them, it had devolved into a battle of survival.
And Mars had orchestrated this entire disaster.
