Chapter 12
Autumn Lopez clenched her jaw.
She wasn’t an idiot. When Mars Wright had threatened her earlier, he hadn’t mentioned the mansion at all, which meant the text she’d received probably wasn’t from him.
Otherwise, he never would have passed up such a perfect opportunity to control her.
If it wasn’t him, then it was obvious who was stirring up trouble.
off.
Lydia wasn’t even pretending anymore. To get at her, she’d torn off the mask of sisterly affection. The gloves were of
“I’m not going to apologize.”
Autumn’s voice was firm. “You asked me to come, and I came. If there’s nothing else, I’m going back to the hospital.”
She was outnumbered by Mars and his friends. Sticking around would only lead to more trouble. She couldn’t win, but she could leave.
She braced herself on the arm of the sofa and struggled to her feet, her face pale as she started for the door.
“Stop!”
Mars grabbed her by the wrist. “Did I say you could go? Autumn, how did you turn into this person?”
“You’re the one who made the mistake, and you won’t even apologize?”
A surge of anger flared through Autumn. “What mistake did I make?”
“Mars, be honest with yourself. Have I bothered Lydia at all since I walked in? You guys had a bet going about me for years, and I’m not even allowed to ask about it?”
“You pushed Lydia, and you’re still denying it?”
Autumn let out a cold laugh. “I said I didn’t push her, and I didn’t! If you don’t believe me, call the cops and check the security footage!”
At the mention of security footage, a flicker of panic crossed Lydia’s eyes.
“Mars, please don’t fight with her. It’s all my fault, I’m really okay. Let’s just drop it. We all came here to have a good time, why ruin it for everyone?”
Autumn shot a cold glance at Lydia. “You can stop playing the saint. If you won’t call the police, I will,”
She raised her phone, ready to dial 911.
*Autumn, have you had enough?!”
Mars smacked the back of her hand. A sharp, stinging pain shot through her, and the next second, her phone went flying.
Someone immediately kicked it under the sofa.
“Stop with the act. You pushed someone and you’re not even sorry. Autumn, you’ve really opened our eyes
“You really think we’re afraid to call the cops? We all know Mr. Wright is in the spotlight for Cloudbreak Corporation’s ninth anniversary. If the police show up now and someone gets a picture, who knows what kind of scandal it’ll turn into.”
“Can’t you women ever tone down the drama and jealousy?”
“Mr. Wright is so damn unlucky to have a wife like you. Instead of helping, you just cause trouble. It’s true what they say- a man needs a supportive wife, not a liability.
Listening to them, Autumn was seething.
She had known Mars for ten years, stood by him as he went from a nobody to the man he was today, even using the Lopez Group’s resources and connections to pave his way,
Now, Cloudbreak Corporation was thriving while the Lopez Group was on the verge of bankruptcy.
Hadn’t she given enough for him?
And now, in their mouths, she had become a burden, a troublemaker for Mars?
He was the one who had an affair with her sister during their marriage, the one who was using her as a surrogate.
How had she, Autumn Lopez, suddenly become the villain in all this?
“Give me back my phone.”
Autumn knew there was no point in arguing with these willfully blind people. Their loyalty was completely with Lydia and Mars. Even if she exposed the truth right here and now, they would just say things like, “What man doesn’t have another
woman?” or “You’re already Mrs. Wright, can’t you even tolerate your own sister?”
She didn’t want to get tangled up with them any longer. The commotion had made the dull ache in her lower abdomen
return. All she wanted was to get out of there and go back to the hospital.
“Can you just stop making a scene!”
Mars looked at her, his face a mask of disappointment. He thought she was still trying to call the police and snarled,
“We’re giving you an out, and you refuse to take it. Autumn, do you really think I won’t get physical with you?”
“Even a three–year–old knows you apologize when you’re wrong. Why are you so stubborn? But of course. A kid with no
mother would turn out this classless!”
The words struck Autumn like a bolt of lightning.
Losing her mother as a child was a wound that had never healed.
She had told Mars countless times how much she envied Lydia, who had grown up with a mother’s love and care.
Back then, Mars would hold her and say, over and over again, “You don’t have a mother, but you have me. I’ll always be
good to you and make up for the love you missed.”
But now, in front of all these people, Mars was saying she had no class because she grew up without a mother.
“Mars Wright!”
Autumn couldn’t hold back her emotions any longer. She raised her hand and slapped him across the face.
The sharp crack of the slap left everyone speechless.
“Mars!”
Lydia cried out, rushing forward to touch his check. Seeing the red mark bloom on his skin, she spun around and furiously confronted Autumn. “What are you doing!”
“It was your fault! Why would you hit him? Don’t you know how important a man’s pride is?”
Before Autumn could say a word, Mars strode toward her, grabbed her, and shoved her into the restroom.
“Autumn, I’ve been patient enough with you. If you insist on making a scene, then you can stay in here and cool off.”
dit,
With that, Mars slammed the door, locked it, and threw the key into a corner of the room.
“Everyone, don’t let Autumn ruin the mood. Let’s move to another room.”
