**Chasing Light, Finding Peace** – by Rohan Verma
The lawyer reclined in his chair, a warm smile spreading across his face as he met Autumn’s gaze. “Ms. Lopez, I assure you, everything is in impeccable order. The transfer of assets to your name can proceed without any delays.”
In that fleeting moment, a wave of genuine happiness washed over Autumn, her smile brightening the room as if it could illuminate the very walls.
“I can’t express how grateful I am for all the effort you’ve dedicated to this,” she responded, her voice brimming with appreciation, her heart swelling with a sense of relief that felt almost overwhelming.
“Not at all,” the lawyer replied, his humility evident in his tone. “It’s my absolute privilege to assist you in this matter.”
Autumn tightened her grip on her phone, a flurry of emotions swirling within her—relief mingled with excitement.
It was Owen who had introduced her to this capable lawyer, and while she had faith in his efficiency, she never anticipated that the process would unfold so seamlessly, leaving her with little to do but revel in the moment.
“I’ll ensure that Mr. Bennett knows to reward you all with a generous bonus,” she promised, envisioning the delighted expressions that would dance across the lawyer’s face at the prospect of extra funds.
For any employee, a bonus was undoubtedly the sweetest form of recognition, a tangible acknowledgment of their hard work and dedication.
As she had hoped, the lawyer’s demeanor brightened at her words. “Thank you, Ms. Lopez.”
After exchanging a few more friendly remarks, Autumn ended the call, her heart still racing with elation.
Her eyes drifted to the asset transfer documents the lawyer had sent over, and her smile widened even further.
Just as she had predicted, her father had opted to sell his assets in order to generate the necessary funds.
A hasty sale meant he wouldn’t fetch a high price; all the properties were sold for ten to twenty percent below the market value.
Autumn had foreseen this outcome, so she had proactively alerted her lawyer to seek potential buyers for the assets.
The real estate under the name of Oliver Lopez had taken a convoluted path, but ultimately, it all circled back to Autumn.
As she observed her portfolio swelling with value, the joy in her eyes was nearly overflowing.
In the past, she had yearned desperately for her father’s affection, but after everything that had transpired, she had come to a profound realization: true success cannot be achieved by depending on others.
Self-reliance is the only pathway to victory.
Fortunately, she had grasped this lesson early on. The rapidly increasing digits in her bank account served as a constant reminder that she had chosen the right direction for her life.
Autumn didn’t linger at her new company for too long.
The individuals Julian had introduced her to were remarkably dependable. They even came equipped with their own teams, and at times, Autumn, the boss, found it challenging to keep pace with them.
Fortunately, after receiving some guidance from Owen, Autumn had made it a point to steer the company’s trajectory. Consequently, the projects her new team was tackling were all in areas she was intimately familiar with.
It didn’t take long for her to catch up with their progress.
She was even able to provide some pertinent advice.
This newfound confidence quickly dispelled any initial doubts the staff had harbored about her capabilities.
With a vibrant atmosphere and exceptional benefits, it was no wonder that productivity was soaring.
As Autumn exited the office, her spirits were high, a lively bounce in her step.
However, upon entering her home and spotting Owen seated in the living room, her smile faltered momentarily.
She quickly plastered on an even larger grin and approached him. “Did you just wake up, or have you just returned?”
Owen shot her a knowing look. “Did you enjoy yourself?”
Autumn hesitated, her body poised to sit down.
“Very much,” she replied, her heart racing slightly.
She hadn’t concealed any of her plans from Owen, so it came as no surprise that he was aware of her activities that day.
“Good,” he nodded, his tone casual, as if he were commenting on the weather rather than her day.
His nonchalance made Autumn feel a twinge of embarrassment.
“Well, none of this would have gone as smoothly without your support,” she admitted, her voice softer now, laden with sincerity.
Owen placed the file he had been holding onto the table.
He moved with the effortless grace of someone accustomed to privilege, yet Autumn could sense a flicker of irritation beneath his calm exterior.
He’s upset again, she realized, reflecting on her previous words.
She had a gut feeling that he perceived her as being too distant in that moment.
He hated that.
Owen had repeatedly reassured her that they were husband and wife, that she didn’t need to tread so carefully around him.
But occasionally, she still found herself forgetting.
“Ahem,” Autumn cleared her throat, attempting to recover the moment. “Is there anything you’d like to do tonight, or anywhere you want to go?”
This piqued his interest.
Owen studied her for a long moment, then, as if conceding, he asked, “Why?”
“I have some free time now, so I thought maybe we could… spend some quality time together?”
“And I assumed you’d want more time with the baby too, right?”
They often said that babies could sense emotions at this stage.
