Autumn Lopez told the driver to take Owen Bennett to a cafe so he wouldn’t have to just wait downstairs.

The driver instinctively looked to Owen, waiting for his approval.

Owen nodded. “Do as my wife says.”

He said it casually, but the driver’s gaze sharpened.

Autumn also noticed a distinct shift in the driver’s attitude toward her.

She didn’t know what it meant, and she didn’t have time to think about it.

Her phone was already blowing up.

Her father must have gotten tired of waiting. Even though there were still a few minutes left of the half–hour he’d given her, he was already sending a barrage of abusive texts.

He called her a terrible, ungrateful daughter, saying it was one thing to disrespect her own father, but how could she neglect her own dead mother?

He even said that if her mom knew what a horrible daughter she was, she’d be angry enough to come back from the dead.

Autumn ignored the vile messages and replied to Mars Wright.

{I’m in the lobby}

He texted back instantly: {Coming down to get you now}

She could feel his urgency even through the text.

Autumn just couldn’t figure out what could possibly make both her father and Mars so frantic.

With Mars’s status and influence, there shouldn’t be any problem he couldn’t solve.

So… did my plan go wrong somewhere?

“Autumn!”

Mars must have sprinted over the second he hung up. Before Autumn could even process her thoughts, he was standing in front of her.

“Autumn, thank you for coming.”

Mars moved in for a hug, but Autumn took a step back, dodging him.

He looked surprised for a second before his expression shifted to one of apology. “I’m so sorry, Autumn. I know you must be furious, but Dad and I were out of options.”

Autumn stared at him coldly.

“So you knew I’d be angry, that I’d be hurt, but you did it anyway.”

“Just tell me. What happened?”

Her eyes were locked on his face, unwavering.

Mars had really let himself go these past few years; he couldn’t even control his expressions like he used to.

And as Cloudbreak Corporation grew more successful, he’d stopped even caring.

In his mind, he was the one who got to look down on others. Who would ever dare to criticize him?

He’d grown more and more arrogant, possessed by a giddy sense that the whole world should revolve around him.

“Promise you won’t get upset when I tell you.”

Mars reached for Autumn’s belly, but she recoiled with a frown of disgust.

“Just say it.”

It wasn’t just that they were getting divorced and she wanted to avoid any physical contact.

The truth was, she found him repulsive.

First he was messing around with Lydia, and now he was with Hannah King. The man’s shamelessness was beyond anything she could have imagined.

The possibility that he was carrying something was sky–high.

“Autumn…”

Mars looked pained, as if he found the words difficult to say.

Autumn’s patience ran out. “If you’re not going to talk, I’m leaving.”

And with that, she actually turned to go.

That finally got Mars moving. He rushed forward to block her.

“Okay, okay, I’ll tell you! Autumn, don’t go. This is an emergency. We really had no other choice.”

Autumn didn’t respond.

To her, everything he was saying was just noise.

They were already planning to mess with her mother’s grave. What was the point of all this talk about having no choice and making a difficult decision?

The moment her father had uttered those words, the rift between them had become completely irreparable.

Autumn didn’t want to forgive them, and she never would.

To do so would be to truly betray her late mother.

“It’s about Lydia-”

Mars had just started when his phone rang.

It was just as frantic as before. Autumn watched as his brow furrowed, catching the flash of annoyance and impatience in his eyes.

Autumn narrowed her eyes.

Looks like Hannah King has some skills after all.

Mars used to put up with the Lopez family for Lydia’s sake.

But now, it was clear his patience with them was wearing thin.

This was the result Autumn wanted.

But it was far from enough.

“Hello.”

Mars answered the phone.

Her father’s voice, seething with barely contained rage, crackled through the receiver.

“Isn’t she there yet?”

“Is that little monster deliberately stalling? Is she trying to get Lydia killed?”

“Does she think I’m joking?”

The hospital lobby was noisy with people.

Even in that environment, Autumn could clearly hear what her father was saying, which just showed how

furious he was on the other end.

Putting together the pieces from what Mars had just let slip and her father’s words, Autumn finally realized they’d summoned her to the hospital because of Lydia.

But what could have happened to Lydia?

She was in the hospital because she got into a fight with Hannah. Autumn wasn’t a doctor.

She couldn’t treat injuries.
