“That Autumn Lopez has been married before. Is Owen Bennett really sure the baby in her belly is his? I swear

I saw her all over a bunch of different guys the other day.”

Ava Henderson gritted her teeth at the thought.

If she had known what a problem Autumn would be, she would have been more ruthless back then and just arranged an “accident” to make her miscarry.

She never imagined Owen and Autumn would suddenly go public, catching her completely off guard.

“You can say that stuff at home, but don’t go spreading rumors out in the open.”

“And to be blunt, the Bennett family’s acknowledgment is more official than any DNA test.”

“First off, the Bennetts would never get their bloodline mixed up. But even if the baby wasn’t Owen’s, the fact that she got him to stand up and claim it just shows she’s got game.

“The Bennetts definitely have their reasons. This isn’t something a fringe family like ours can get involved in.”

As he spoke, Marcus Henderson felt a pang of pity for his niece.

Of all the people to have a one–sided crush on, it had to be Owen Bennett.

Before Owen’s sudden announcement today, Marcus had even wondered if the guy was asexual.

Who would’ve thought? He’s the quiet type, but when he makes a move, it’s massive.

Wife and child, all in one fell swoop.

That’s Owen Bennett for you–so efficient, it’s kind of awesome.

“Ava, you’re a woman. You of all people should understand what Owen’s actions today really mean.”

Marcus patted his niece’s shoulder sympathetically.

“Find someone new. It doesn’t matter what the deal is between Owen and Autumn. They’ve officially announced they’re engaged, and they have a child together. There’s no way for you to squeeze in.”

“I don’t believe it!”

Ava slapped his hand away.

“If they’re so in love, why are they trying to suppress the news?”

“If they’re announcing it to the world, why keep it confined to such a small circle?”

Ava’s eyes grew brighter as she spoke.

“With Owen Bennett’s status, if he were really getting married, wouldn’t he be shouting it from the rooftops?”

“He made a big show of supporting Autumn, but he never said if or when they’re actually getting married.”

Ruby Bennett finally saw her chance to jump in. “Exactly!”

“I know the Bennetts. They’re straight–shooters, and they hate complications.”

“The family would also never allow people to gossip about them.”

“If the Bennetts were really set on welcoming Autumn into the family, they would’ve been sending out invitations on the spot. Why would they drag their feet?”

“Something about this is definitely fishy.”

Seeing that Ruby’s words were exactly what she wanted to hear, Ava finally gave her a warmer look.

“See? Aunt Ruby is a Bennett, so if she’s saying it, it must be true. Besides, Uncle, if the Bennetts were really planning a wedding, do you think they wouldn’t invite us?”

That’s right!

Marcus slapped his forehead. “You have a point. We’re connected to the Bennetts, distantly or not. They wouldn’t just snub us if they were throwing a wedding, right? We haven’t cut ties or done anything to piss them off. They wouldn’t be that cold.”

Seeing that she had won Marcus over, a confident smile spread across Ava’s face. “Exactly. So maybe the Bennetts are playing some kind of 4D chess, and that Autumn Lopez is just a decoy they put out there.”

Ruby Bennett enthusiastically agreed.

She even added her own theory, “Knowing that boy, Owen, it’s entirely possible he hired this Autumn woman as a cover.”

At that, both Marcus’s and Ava’s eyes lit up.

“Of course!”

Marcus clapped his hands together.

His expression wasn’t one of excitement for his niece’s chances, but rather the pure joy of getting some juicy gossip.

“So that’s how they’re playing it.”

The admiration in Marcus’s eyes was almost tangible.

Ruby couldn’t help but roll her eyes at him.

Even Ava was losing her composure, unable to resist roasting him. “Uncle Marcus, aren’t you a little old to be fangirling like this? Does Owen Bennett even know you worship him this much?”

From the way her uncle revered Owen, she figured that if Owen claimed crap was gold, he’d probably nod along and say, “Oh yeah, totally, it’s gold.”

The thought made Ava’s lip twitch with a strange mix of disgust for her uncle.

“What does a kid like you know?”

“You’ve never been in the business world, so you have no idea what Owen Bennett represents to everyone in

it.”

“Let me put it this way.”

“If every businessperson is like a student at your school, then Owen Bennett is that untouchable genius you can never surpass. While you’re stressing over midterms and finals, he’s already published several papers in top–tier journals.”

“While you’re finally graduating and scrambling to find a job, he’s already launched a successful startup and is in his final round of funding.”

“After a long struggle, you finally get a full–time offer and become another corporate drone, while his company has already had its IPO, making him worth hundreds of millions.”

“Tell me, if you met someone like that, wouldn’t you admire him?” Marcus looked Ava up and down, chuckled, and continued, “You have a crush on him, don’t you? Isn’t it his talent and ability that won you over?”

Ava didn’t know how to answer.

She was afraid she’d reveal her true thoughts.

After all, she didn’t like Owen because of how brilliant he was.
