The Day I Quit Him (Autumn and Mars) novel Chapter 220

**Chasing Light, Finding Peace by Rohan Verma**

The way he articulated his words… Autumn could almost perceive the pain woven into his tone. It was as if every syllable carried a weight, a burden that pressed heavily on his heart.

To anyone who hadn’t witnessed their interactions, it might have appeared that she was the one tormenting him, pushing him into a corner.

“That’s not what I meant…” she attempted to clarify, her voice tinged with a mix of frustration and concern.

Autumn was acutely aware that Owen was being deliberately provocative.

He understood her nature—her tendency to be polite, to tread lightly around his feelings, always worried about encroaching on his space.

Yet, he twisted her intentions, clearly aiming to instill a sense of guilt within her.

With a deep inhale, Autumn steeled herself. It was time to confront the issue head-on, to engage in a proper dialogue with Owen without further delay.

“About what you mentioned earlier, I think—”

Before she could finish her thought, Owen interjected, “Are you sure you want to have this conversation on an empty stomach?”

“What about our baby? I don’t want them to be hungry.”

His response was both unexpected and profound. “I wouldn’t want our child to think I’m an unfit father before they’re even born.”

Autumn was left utterly speechless, her mind racing.

With a heavy heart, she muttered, “Fine, I’ll wait outside,” and exited the kitchen, her footsteps echoing in the silence that followed.

Owen observed her swift departure, a sly smile tugging at the corners of his lips, a mix of amusement and affection in his gaze.

As Autumn settled into the dining room, her thoughts were a chaotic whirlwind, but soon, a mouthwatering aroma wafted through the air, drawing her attention like a moth to a flame.

The scent was intoxicating, wrapping around her senses and igniting a hunger she hadn’t realized was there. Her stomach growled in response, a low rumble that betrayed her embarrassment.

In an attempt to distract herself, Autumn reached for her phone, only to find her hand empty. She had left it upstairs, a small oversight that now felt significant.

With no other option, she resigned herself to waiting.

Fortunately, Owen emerged from the kitchen shortly thereafter.

“Is beef noodle soup okay?” he asked, a hint of uncertainty in his voice.

Autumn nodded eagerly. “Yeah, perfect.”

At this point, she was indifferent to what it was, as long as it could satiate her hunger.

Owen placed a steaming bowl of beef noodle soup in front of her, and the aroma enveloped her senses. Autumn flashed him a quick smile, picked up her chopsticks, and dove into her meal with gusto.

Typically, Owen wasn’t one to indulge in late-night snacks.

But witnessing the joy on Autumn’s face as she savored her food compelled him to return to the kitchen for a bowl of his own.

They sat across from each other, the atmosphere warm and comfortable as they slurped their noodles.

Despite the satisfaction of the meal, Autumn felt a lingering hunger.

She considered the consequences of overeating so late at night, the discomfort it might bring, and reluctantly set down her chopsticks.

“Are you full?” Owen inquired, his brow furrowing slightly.

Autumn instinctively wanted to shake her head, but a wave of embarrassment washed over her. “I’m about eighty percent full,” she admitted, a hint of sheepishness in her tone.

Owen chuckled softly. “Eighty percent is good enough. If you eat too much, you’ll have trouble digesting it and won’t be able to sleep.”

They were clearly on the same wavelength, a silent understanding passing between them.

Autumn smiled and hummed in agreement as Owen stood to clear the bowls.

Without hesitation, she leaped to her feet. “Let me help with that.”

Owen had been the one taking care of everything; she couldn’t just sit idly by.

“It’s fine,” he replied, already gathering the dishes in his hands. “You go upstairs and get some rest.”

Autumn watched as he turned towards the kitchen, a pang of indecision gripping her. After a brief moment of contemplation, she remained where she was, rooted to the spot.

When Owen returned and found her still standing there, he raised an eyebrow, curiosity etched on his face. “Something else?”

With a deep breath, Autumn squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah. Can we talk?”

Owen regarded her with a serious expression, taking in the gravity of the moment.

“Okay. Come to my study,” he instructed, his voice steady.

Autumn followed him, her heart racing as she watched him pour two glasses of warm water, the steam curling up into the air like a promise.

She offered to take one of the glasses, but he gently shook his head.
