The Day I Quit Him (Autumn and Mars) novel Chapter 68

**Chasing Light, Finding Peace** – by Rohan Verma

**Chapter 68**

Autumn let out a harsh, bitter laugh that echoed in the dimly lit room.

“What’s going on here? Is this some sort of twisted love triangle? Did your little romance crash and burn?”

She had no clue about the specifics of the situation, but knowing Mars and Lydia’s history of questionable decisions, she could easily connect the dots. The police station was likely the last place they wanted to end up, yet here they were.

The assistant stood awkwardly, his gaze fixed firmly on the floor, avoiding any attempt to meet Autumn’s eyes. He could feel the weight of her presence, a palpable tension that made him feel small and insignificant.

Lydia, on the other hand, flickered an expression of mockery, but it vanished as quickly as it appeared, replaced by her well-rehearsed damsel-in-distress act. Autumn recognized this performance all too well; it was a classic move, one she had seen countless times before. She couldn’t be bothered to give Lydia a second thought.

“Autumn, don’t you dare talk nonsense!” Mars interjected, his voice rising defensively.

“Do you even care about your sister’s reputation?” he continued, his tone laced with irritation.

Despite the prick of guilt gnawing at him, Mars couldn’t help but snap back at Autumn’s biting sarcasm.

Autumn’s voice rose above his, sharp and unyielding. “Then why don’t you enlighten me? What on earth are you, your assistant, and my sister doing here at the police station? For assault, of all things?”

“Are you three years old, Mars? Do you even have any sense? Who do you think you are, getting into a physical altercation?”

“What could possibly justify you attacking your own assistant?”

Her words struck Mars like a slap, leaving him momentarily speechless.

Seizing the moment, Lydia began to sniffle, her voice quivering. “Autumn, it’s all my fault. Please don’t be angry with Mars; he was just—”

“Just shut up!” Autumn cut her off, her patience wearing thin.

“Were our relatives in the family group chat not clear enough for you? Do you want me to spell it out? Fine. Why did you, my sister, insist on having my husband stay at the hospital to take care of you? And when you were discharged, what? You don’t have a home to return to? You just had to move into the house I share with Mars? Has the Lopez family gone broke? Are you planning on adopting us as your new parents?”

The color drained from Lydia’s face, her expression one of shock and disbelief. “Autumn, how could you say something like that about me? I—”

“Autumn! Don’t you think you’re going too far?” Mars interjected, his voice rising in frustration.

Clutching her stomach with one hand, Autumn scoffed. “Then tell me, why did you two end up at the police station?”

Her words landed like a heavy weight, rendering Mars momentarily mute. The anger that had flared just moments ago dissipated, leaving an uncomfortable silence in its wake.

Lydia, too, wore a guilty expression. After all, it was humiliating enough to have someone see her in such a vulnerable state, especially when that someone was her assistant standing right in front of Mars.

She understood how a man’s mind worked all too well. Every time Mars would draw near to her intimately, he might be haunted by this very moment, creating an unbearable awkwardness that could drive a wedge between them.

Lydia’s fingers curled into tight fists, her gaze turning icy as she focused on the assistant, as if he were a ghost she wished to erase from existence.

The assistant felt the weight of her glare, a shiver running down his spine as fear gripped him. He had no idea that this was the situation in the hospital room! Had he known, he would have never set foot inside, not for anything in the world.

The thought of the kind of people Mars and Lydia were made his hands tremble uncontrollably.

“Alright, that’s enough! No more shouting!”

A police officer stepped in, sensing the chaos escalating, his voice firm and commanding.

“Are you here to post bail for Mr. Wright? And you are?”

The officer glanced at Autumn, his question routine yet loaded with implications.

Autumn’s face remained impassive. “I’m his wife.”

The officer’s expression shifted, surprise flickering across his features.

“Well, then—”

“Stop talking!” Mars interjected, his tone sharp.

“I want to settle this privately!”

The urgency in his voice was palpable; he couldn’t afford the embarrassment of this incident becoming public. He shot a threatening glare at his assistant, his eyes blazing. “How much money do you want? This can’t get out. You know it won’t be good for anyone if this escalates.”

“Mr. Wright!” the officer admonished, rapping sharply on the desk. “I suggest you adjust your attitude. Are you seriously threatening the victim right here in the police station? Do you think money gives you the right to do whatever you want?”
