THE DIVORCE GAMBIT From Dumped Wife to CEO's Forever novel Chapter 1030

Drug trafficking? Cooperate with an investigation?

The words left Wanda and Aelfric completely stunned. They never imagined that just one day after their daughter's arrest, the police would come for them.

What was this? When it rains, it pours.

Aelfric quickly composed himself. "Officers, there must be some mistake. I'm a law-abiding citizen. My company is a legitimate food transport business. How could we possibly be involved in drug trafficking?"

The lead officer glanced at him. "I'll ask you this: is the truck with the license plate J235N3 registered to your company?"

Aelfric hesitated for a second before answering. "Yes, it is. What about it?"

"That truck was found to be carrying twenty kilograms of heroin at a checkpoint."

Twenty kilograms of heroin!

The color drained from Aelfric's face. It was true. For years, the company he and his wife owned, while ostensibly transporting fruits and vegetables, had a much more sinister side to it.

Although Aelfric had made a fortune in real estate years ago, the recent economic downturn had hit him hard. Being an amateur in the field, he was constantly getting fleeced. So, he had turned his sights to narcotics. The industry was incredibly profitable—all profit, no loss. In just two years, his net worth had skyrocketed from a few hundred million to several billion. Otherwise, he never would have been able to move his entire family to Neon Spire. For two years, everything had gone smoothly. No one ever suspected their company, and nothing ever went wrong.

But now, how had they suddenly been caught?

"It's a mistake! This has to be a mistake! Someone is setting us up!" Wanda was the first to react, bursting into tears. "Officers, my family would never do something like this! We're good people…"

Drug trafficking was a major felony, especially for kingpins like them. They could be facing the death penalty. Wanda was no longer worried about her daughter. She was worried about herself. She didn't want to face a firing squad.

Aelfric nodded vigorously. "Yes, yes, it's a mistake! Those drugs have nothing to do with us! I know—it was the driver! It must have been the driver! You should investigate him! It has nothing to do with us."

"We will determine whether you're involved or not. For now, you're coming with us."

Wanda and Aelfric were escorted into a police car.

Inside the detention center, Charis was waiting for her parents to arrange for a lawyer. In her situation, a good lawyer should be able to argue her down to a short sentence. Once she got out, she'd be back on top. The Gonzales family had plenty of money. Who cared if she had a prison record?

But she waited and waited. A full day passed, and still no lawyer came.

Normally, her parents would have sent one immediately after hearing she was in trouble. Had something gone wrong?

Just then, she heard a voice outside her cell. "Inmate C203, out here."

It was too much. This was just too cruel! When she got out of here, she would make Caitlin pay.

However, the officer's next words plunged Charis into an icy abyss.

"Charis, I'm going to ask you now. Do you know a Sabrina?"

Sabrina. She was Charis's high school classmate and the source of her nightmares for years.

During an argument, Charis had pushed Sabrina from the 32nd floor. She had only meant to scare her, but she never expected Sabrina to actually fall.

The fall had killed Sabrina instantly, leaving her body mangled. Fortunately, it had been late at night. The building was part of a development owned by Aelfric and hadn't been sold yet, so he had used his connections to cover the whole thing up.

The incident had left Charis with severe psychological trauma. It took her a full six months to recover. Now, hearing Sabrina's name from a police officer's lips, a cold sweat broke out all over her body.

Framing someone for theft might only land her a few years in prison, but murder? That's a whole different story.

The more Charis thought about it, the more terrified she grew. She couldn't figure out how this had come to light.

Faced with the officer's question, she kept shaking her head frantically. "I don't know her! I've never known anyone named Sabrina!"
