Chapter 6 Cleaning Up the Mess

William Miller looked at her in shock, a look of confusion on his face.

Without even glancing at him, Evelyn Hart turned around and asked, “Miss Bell, what exactly happened? Where’s the other child? Is it okay if I talk to him?”

Clara Bell looked at William Miller, then at Evelyn Hart, and nodded slightly in agreement.

She motioned for Evelyn Hart to sit down and then softly explained the whole story.

“I asked the other students. Apparently, William and Lucas got into an argument for some reason. Neither of them would back down, and that’s how the fight started.”

Lucas?

Evelyn Hart nodded and made a mental note of the name.

She had seen the injuries on William Miller’s face. Since it was a fight, Lucas must have been hurt pretty badly too, right?

In response to her question, Clara Bell gave an awkward smile.

“Well… actually, Lucas only got a few minor injuries. Compared to William’s wounds, his are just minor scrapes.”

Clara Bell was indeed a bit helpless.

After all, William Miller was the most severely injured, and as his mother, Evelyn Hart might not be happy to hear this.

But Evelyn Hart just frowned and glanced at William Miller before looking away.

“Miss Bell, do you know what they were arguing about?”

Clara Bell shook her head, saying she wasn’t sure of the exact reason.

“I asked the other students, but they couldn’t explain it clearly. They just said the argument started out of nowhere and then escalated. But one thing’s for sure: William was the one who threw the first punch.”

Hearing this, Evelyn Hart was silent for a moment. Then she stood up and said, “Miss Bell, I’d like to see Lucas first. Is that okay?”

Clara Bell nodded in agreement and led Evelyn Hart to the next-door office.

Lucas was a young boy. He was sitting on a chair in the office, rubbing the scratch on his face with his right hand.

It seemed to hurt a bit, as he furrowed his brow slightly, but he didn’t make a sound. His eyes showed a hint of precocity and stubbornness.

When Evelyn Hart walked into the office, Lucas was taken aback for a moment. Then he quickly composed himself, trying his best to look more composed.

She walked slowly up to Lucas, crouched down so her eyes were level with his, and said gently, “Yes, I’m William’s mom. Lucas, does your face still hurt? Auntie wants to apologize to you on William’s behalf. No matter what the reason was, it’s never right to hit someone.”

Although William Miller was seriously injured, he was the one who started the fight, so he brought it upon himself.

Evelyn Hart did feel sorry for him, but she also knew that what William Miller needed wasn’t her concern.

She didn’t have the habit of trying to win over someone who was cold to her, so she didn’t show any concern.

Lucas seemed surprised by Evelyn Hart’s words.

He blinked and nodded slowly. “It’s okay. I hit him pretty hard.”

Before she could say anything, Lucas tilted his head and continued, “You’re nothing like what William said. You’re a great mom. William Miller is a jerk. He doesn’t like you and wants someone else to replace you. You shouldn’t be nice to him anymore.”

These words left both Evelyn Hart and Clara Bell, who was standing behind her, stunned.

Clara Bell rushed forward to stop him. “Lucas, what are you talking about? This is William’s family business. You can’t just say things like that, okay?”

But Evelyn Hart put her hand on Clara Bell’s to stop her and shook her head, indicating she was fine.

She turned back to Lucas, having a hunch. “Lucas, why did you say that? Is it related to the fight between you and William?”

Lucas lowered his head and used his right index finger to pick at the armrest of the chair, looking a bit embarrassed.

“I heard William bragging to others that he was going to have a new mom soon. He said his new mom was really nice, that she’d let him skip school, and that everyone should get rid of their annoying moms and find new ones.”

As Lucas spoke, his head dropped lower and lower. “I didn’t like him saying that, so I argued with him. Then he called me a kid without a mom and said I should find one first. That made me so angry that I started fighting with him.”

The more Evelyn Hart heard, the darker her expression became.

She never would have guessed that this was the reason for the fight.

She was angry, and at the same time, her heart ached sharply.

Although she had known for a while that, like Ethan Miller, William Miller only had eyes for Leah Foster, having the fact confirmed made her feel betrayed.

Maybe it was because of Evelyn Hart’s suddenly forceful attitude. William Miller opened his mouth but couldn’t get a word out.
