The Don's Orphan Wife Is A Mafia Empire Princess (Elara) novel Chapter 20

Chapter 9 None of Her Business

Evelyn Hart knew Sophia was teasing her and rolled her eyes. “I could forget anyone else, but I’d never forget Miss Bennett’s taste.”

Sophia Bennett exclaimed in mock surprise, “No wonder you’re a doctor. Your memory is amazing! Remembering my favorite dishes even though we haven’t eaten out together in so long. I’m so touched!”

The two had been friends for years, but ever since Evelyn Hart got married, she had focused all her attention on her family, and the time she spent with Sophia Bennett naturally decreased significantly. Sophia wasn’t too happy about it, but she wasn’t truly angry either. So, after teasing Evelyn Hart for a bit, she got to the point. “Seriously, are you really going to divorce Mr. Miller? You’re not joking, right?”

Leaning back in her chair, Evelyn Hart paused for a moment upon hearing the question. Then she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and looked at Sophia Bennett with a faint smile. “Yeah, I’ve decided to get a divorce. We’ve been friends for so long. You know my personality. Once I make a decision, I don’t go back on it. Don’t tell me you’re going to try to talk me out of it too?”

She had heard too many words of advice recently. “Evelyn, with Ethan’s conditions, you won’t find anyone better after leaving him.” “You’ve been married for seven years and have a child. Can’t you sit down and talk things through instead of getting a divorce?”

Evelyn Hart was sick and tired of hearing such remarks.

Yes, Ethan Miller had good qualifications, but what she wanted was someone to support her through life, not just someone who could provide material comforts while giving her almost nothing in terms of emotional support.

Looking into Evelyn Hart’s calm eyes, Sophia Bennett was certain that she wasn’t joking and was seriously planning to divorce Ethan Miller.

Immediately, her eyes filled with sympathy. “Evelyn, be honest with me. Did that bastard mistreat you?”

Evelyn Hart was taken aback by Sophia’s indignation on her behalf. Then a warm feeling welled up inside her. “It’s all in the past. I don’t want to talk about it, and I won’t have anything to do with him in the future.”

The more nonchalant Evelyn Hart seemed, the more sympathetic Sophia Bennett felt. She knew her friend well. A seven-year relationship wouldn’t be so easily given up unless Evelyn had suffered a great deal. Sophia Bennett let out a sigh and mentally cursed Ethan Miller’s entire family.

“Evelyn, now that you’re getting a divorce, what about the child? Have you and Ethan decided who William will live

with?”

Just then, the waiter came with their food. Evelyn Hart slowly shook her head. She didn’t want to burden Sophia with all the unpleasant details and just casually brushed it off. “William wants to stay with Ethan Miller, and I respect his choice. Come on, let’s not talk about these depressing things. Let’s enjoy our meal.”

They had a great time during the meal, and a lot of Evelyn Hart’s pent-up frustration faded away.

After the meal, they

By the time she said goodbye to Sophia Bennett and returned to her rented house with numerous bags, it was already evening.

“Whoosh-”

Looking at the shopping bags casually tossed onto the sofa, Evelyn Hart stretched, letting out a long sigh of relief.

After a tiring day, she needed a bath to relax. She grabbed her toiletries and took a quick shower. When she came out, ready to go to sleep, she realized her muted phone had eight missed calls-all from the same person.

Alarmed, Evelyn Hart quickly called back. “Hello? Caleb, sorry. I was in the shower and didn’t have my phone with me, so I missed your calls. Is there something urgent?”

Caleb Gray wearily rubbed his temples. “Not exactly. Are you free now? I’ll send you a medical record. Take a good look at it.”

A medical record? Had Caleb encountered a difficult patient?

Evelyn Hart’s heart tightened, and she replied promptly, “Yes, I’m free. Send it to me now, and I’ll check it right away.”

After hanging up, she opened her email, waiting for the file.

A few minutes later, a new email notification chimed. She clicked it open.

The record detailed a patient’s complex and challenging condition, unlike anything she’d dealt with before.

After careful reading, Evelyn Hart frowned deeply.

She chose her words carefully before replying. “Caleb, I’ve reviewed the record. The situation is intricate. My suggestion is to convene an expert consultation.”

Caleb Gray was silent for a moment before speaking. “Without an expert consultation, if you were to take on this patient, what do you estimate the cure rate would be?”

She? Evelyn Hart was taken aback. Her heart began pounding violently. “I… conservatively speaking, only 30%. But Caleb, with your guidance, I believe the odds could improve. Still, I strongly recommend an expert consultation first to develop a more reliable and effective treatment plan. It’s our responsibility to the patient.”

After a pause, she asked tentatively, “Caleb, may I ask who this patient is? And… what’s your relationship with him?”

Her voice held curiosity and respect.

Caleb Gray sighed. “I knew you’d figure it out. Since you’ve sensed something, I won’t hide it. He’s a close friend and a renowned figure in our academic field. Despite his outstanding achievements, he’s now ill and wants to give up treatment. I know he’s losing hope because of the low success rate, but I can’t bear to watch him give up like this.”

Even after hanging up, Caleb’s words echoed in Evelyn Hart’s mind. “Evelyn, I understand this medical record. I came to you because you’re my most promising student, even better than me. Over the years, your medical skills must have improved greatly. I was hoping you’d prove me wrong.”

Thinking of this, a bitter taste welled up in her heart.

Sleep eluded her as she dove into researching the illness. She worked until dawn before finally dozing off.

Evelyn Hart slept soundly until a phone call jolted her awake.

Groggily, she fumbled for her phone, answered it, and before she could speak, a scolding voice erupted from the other end. “Evelyn Hart, where are you? William has a fever. Come to the hospital immediately!”
