Chapter 10 She Can’t Let Go
Evelyn Hart had stayed up late the previous night, poring over materials related to her mentor’s friend’s case. Already exhausted, the sudden call startled her fully awake. She sat up in bed, eyes barely open.
“What?” Her voice was hoarse and laced with confusion.
Ethan Miller’s tone on the other end was irritated. “I said William is sick! Get to the hospital right now!”
Evelyn Hart blinked slowly, taking a moment to register who was calling. Pressing her temple, which throbbed from lack of sleep, she replied in a hoarse voice, “No.”
She wasn’t a saint. She couldn’t care for William after he’d hurt her so deeply, despite him being the child she’d carried
for ten months.
Ethan Miller seemed shocked by her refusal. After a brief silence, his dissatisfaction grew, mixed with disbelief. “Evelyn Hart, William is your son. How can you be so heartless when he’s ill?”
Was he trying to guilt-trip her? Evelyn Hart sneered inwardly. If she weren’t so tired, she’d have argued with him. But now, all she wanted was to end the call and go back to sleep.
Summoning her last bit of energy, she tried to sound more alert. “Ethan Miller, don’t lecture me. William wants Leah Foster as his new mother, doesn’t he? I’m just being considerate and stepping aside. Also, remember our situation-we’ll get the divorce certificate in eighteen days. You have no right to blame me. I’m exhausted and need rest. As his father, you should take more responsibility when he’s sick. But if you still want to shirk your duties like before, that’s your choice.”
Ethan Miller was left speechless. After a long pause, he managed to say, “Evelyn, William is just a child. He doesn’t know any better…”
Doesn’t know better?
Evelyn Hart interrupted him with a sarcastic laugh. “Let’s see how many excuses you can come up with. If he doesn’t know better, then how did he come up with the idea of wanting Leah Foster as his new mother? Did you teach him
that? Don’t treat me like a fool.”
Ethan Miller fell silent again, unable to refute her, because what she said was true.
After a moment, he said, “Do you have to bring up Leah now? I’ve already explained that between us…”
Perhaps Ethan Miller wanted to explain, but Evelyn Hart didn’t have the energy to listen.

Evelyn Hart rubbed her temples, too tired to listen. “Enough. I don’t want to argue. I’m exhausted and need rest. Don’t bother me, got it?” She paused, then added mockingly, “Leah Foster is probably at the hospital, isn’t she? If she’s there, why call me? Are you reluctant to let her tire herself out and want me to be a free nanny?”
Before Ethan Miller could respond, she directly hung up.
Her drowsiness had vanished, replaced by annoyance and helplessness.
Evelyn Hart knew t

espite her tough words, she couldn’t sever her emotional bond with William. After all, they nnection, and she’d always been the one to care for him during his illnesses. She knew better
than anyone how William was when sick.
Sitting on the bed, gazing at the warm sunlight outside, she gripped the bedsheet tightly, her fingertips turning pale.
Her mind drifted back to when William was at his weakest and most prone to illness-a time when Ethan Miller was too busy to care for them, leaving her and William to rely on each other.
When William was a child, during every high-fever episode, he’d cling to her with tearful eyes as if saying, “Mom, I feel so bad. Please stay with me.”
No matter how tired she was, she’d drop everything to sit by his bed, telling stories and singing until he fell asleep. Sometimes, fearing his fever might spike again at night, she’d stay awake, one hand on his forehead, the other holding

a thermometer, constantly checking his temperature.
Each time the fever subsided, she’d breathe a sigh of relief, only to worry about a relapse.
Back then, with Ethan Miller absent and uncaring, she felt like a robot, living solely for William, tending to his every need. Her world revolved entirely around him.
And when William Miller showed signs of improvement and smiled, Evelyn Hart would feel that all the hard work was worth it. She would hold William Miller tightly and tell him, “William, get better soon. Mom can’t live without you.”
Remembering those days, Evelyn Hart leaned back on the bed, covering her reddened, tear-filled eyes with her arm.
“This is torture…” she murmured in the quiet room.
After an unknown period of time, the phone that she had casually tossed aside suddenly rang again.
Instinctively, she sat up and quickly answered it.
“Hello?”
But this time, it wasn’t Ethan Miller’s voice-it was her mentor, Caleb Gray.
“What’s wrong? Were you waiting for someone’s call?” Caleb Gray detected a hint of disappointment in her tone and asked with concern.
Evelyn Hart took a deep breath, trying to sound calm. “No, Caleb. I just… had something on my mind.”
Hearing this, Caleb Gray was skeptical but didn’t press further as he realized she didn’t want to talk. He simply said “Oh” and then got to the point. “I saw your message from early this morning. You said you found something new? What is it?”
