Leeanne raced all the way to the palace doors, barely slowing down.

Most of the merfolk were crowded in the northwest corner, and even the guards stretched their necks to see what was happening. When Leeanne appeared, one of them called out, “Hey, what are you up to?”

Leeanne shot back, “Just looking for something!”

Without missing a beat, she slipped out of the palace, dove into the water, and headed straight for the cave she’d discovered earlier.

She had to get Mira out right now.

The Mermaid Queen could return any moment, and when she did, she’d probably jump right back into her twisted mission to tear Mira apart.

If that happened, Mira would be gone for good.

Leeanne didn’t have time to worry about their plan anymore. Mira was in real danger. Just hiding and watching wouldn’t help. She had to get Mira out of there, far away from the Queen.

Everything else could wait.

She made her way to the cave, planning to gather Emmett and Gideon there so they could all hide out for

now.

Once one left the palace, there was no way back in. Unless things got truly dire, she wasn’t planning to leave- at least not until tomorrow, when Mira woke up and she could ask what Mira thought.

She needed to find out if there was some kind of misunderstanding.

Leeanne raced through the water and quickly slipped into the cave.

Meanwhile, Emmett had been keeping everyone updated in the Invincible Squad group chat.

Emmett said: [Gideon and I grabbed the mermaid princess and bolted, but there’s nowhere to hide.]

Emmett said: [Ugh, I’m way too big to find a spot for all three of us. Gideon’s carrying the princess and hiding behind a coral reef, and I’m keeping watch nearby.]

Emmett said: [Crap, the Mermaid Queen’s back! She just noticed the princess is missing and she’s totally losing it.]

Suddenly, Leeanne caught the urgent blast of a horn.

Emmett said: [Whoa, all the merfolk are rushing to the main square. The Queen’s ordering everyone to gather–everyone has to show up, not a single one missing. Ugh, she’s pulling me along, and I really, really don’t want to go!]

Leeanne thought, ‘With the princess gone, the Queen’s definitely checking everyone for suspects.

Emmett was big and awkward–looking, totally stood out from the rest of the merfolk. There probably had never been anyone like him here, so he’d be the number one suspect, no doubt about it.

Gideon was just as conspicuous. He was way too muscular to blend in with the others.

Leeanne said: [I’m calling you guys over now. Get to me, and Gideon, keep holding onto the princess!]

Gideon said: [Got it!]

Emmett said: [The merfolk are way too eager to drag me to the square. Leeanne, wait a bit before calling me -vanishing right now would be way too suspicious.]

Leeanne called Gideon first, and in a flash, he showed up in the cave, carrying Mira in his arms.

He gently laid Mira down on the ground.

Leeanne just gave Mira a quick look, then her focus shifted right back to Emmett.

Right now, Emmett was the only one still in danger.

Emmett said: [I made up some excuse about needing the bathroom and slipped out. Okay, Leeanne, pull me in… Wait, damn, I just bumped into another one of my buddies!]

Leeanne summoned him right away, and in a flash, Emmett appeared in front of them.
