The Mermaid Queen was left speechless, and even Mila was taken aback, her face written with disbelief.
The Mermaid Queen’s expression shifted. With a sudden flick of her tail, she sent the dozen or so mermaids behind her away, leaving only Leeanne, Emmett, Gideon, Elvis, Mila, and the Mermaid Queen herself.
With all the other mermaids gone, Prince Elvis finally confronted his mother. “Mom, you told me the tailbone is the source of our abilities. Why did you have to kill Mila and take her tailbone to give it to me?”
The Mermaid Queen’s expression turned cold. “Who told you that?”
Elvis looked fragile, his voice trembling. “Yesterday, I didn’t take the medicine you gave me. I stayed awake the whole time. I heard everything you said to Mila, and I saw everything you tried to do. Mom, why would you do this? Am I really that much of a letdown to you?”
Elvis looked crushed. “If Mila’s so amazing, why not just treat her like your own daughter and make her your heir instead?”
The Mermaid Queen’s face fell.
Mila’s eyes went wide as she stared at Prince Elvis.
The Mermaid Queen barked, “That’s ridiculous! Mila is my real daughter!”
Elvis let out a mocking laugh. “If she was really your daughter, you wouldn’t have treated her like that. If she was your daughter, you wouldn’t have slapped a bounty mission on her the second you found out she’d turned evil.
“If she was your daughter, you wouldn’t have messed with her body after she died, making sure she couldn’t even rest in peace!”
The Mermaid Queen yelled, “You’re making things up…”
Elvis lifted his hand, looking completely worn out. “I remember everything from when I was little. Not a single memory is gone. That’s why I’ve always felt so empty inside. Mom, I remember it all. Mila isn’t my real sister!”
Mila’s face turned deathly pale, and she instinctively backed away several steps.
Elvis turned to her. “Mila, I’m not your brother, and she’s not your mother. Don’t cling to them anymore. Just leave. If you stay, you’ll die.”
Seeing Mila’s stunned expression, Elvis yelled, “She’s going to kill you! She’s always wanted you dead! Get out of here!”
Mila shot a stunned look at the Mermaid Queen, completely blindsided.
Leeanne yanked Mila forward. “Mila, move! If we don’t get out now, it’ll be too late!”

This changes everything! Mila’s not even the Queen’s real daughter? No wonder the Queen never gave a damn about her. Leeanne thought.
Mila looked pale as a sheet. She said, “Alright, let’s get out of here!”
Without warning, she tossed a big white net over Leeanne, Gideon, and Emmett, trapping them inside. Then, just like a flying fish, she spun around and darted off into the distance.
She was hauling the net along with her as she swam away,
The Mermaid Queen swept her golden staff through the air, and with a thunderous boom, a shockwave blasted straight toward them.
As golden ripples shimmered and rippled outward in dazzling rings, Leeanne felt a surge of panic. She yelled, “Quick, use the Queen’s scales!”
The Queen had once handed out her scales to the mission–takers. They were supposed to protect against a fatal strike.
But they still hadn’t used them!
Luckily, both Gideon and Leeanne had one.
But Emmett was out of luck–he didn’t have one.
The three of them were crammed together in the net, barely able to move, like sardines in a can. Leeanne gave Emmett a hard kick, shoving him to the back, and then she and Gideon quickly used the Queen’s scales.
The golden blast hit with a deafening boom, and Leeanne’s head went fuzzy. She lost consciousness on the
spot.
She wasn’t alone. Gideon and Emmett got knocked out too.
Mila gritted her teeth, spun around, and flung a shell to shield them, absorbing most of the hit herself. Blood spilled from her lips.
The Mermaid Queen’s expression was icy. With a flick of her tail, she was about to dart after them.
Elvis grabbed her arm, holding her back. “Mom, please, don’t go. They’re all my friends.”
The Mermaid Queen snapped, “Get out of my way! You’re useless. Just look at your friends. What kind of people are they?”
She shouted, “They’re helping Mila. They’re not your friends.”
Elvis froze, then let go of the Mermaid Queen, his expression turning bleak. “Yeah, I guess I really am useless. Sorry for troubling you, Mom.”
A flash of silver shot from his hand, darting toward his throat.
“Elvis!” The Mermaid Queen cried out in shock. She stopped chasing Leeanne and the others, hurriedly

throwing up her hand to intercept the silver flash.
Sull, a thin red line appeared across Elvis’s neck.
The Mermaid Queen hurried over, supporting Elvis, who looked utterly defeated. Her expression twisted with both anger and sorrow. “Why would you try to take your own life? I’m so disappointed in you…
She paused, then gritted her teeth and carried Elvis on her back. “Come on, I’ll take you home and patch you
She knew better than to chase after Mila now. If she left Elvis alone for even a second, he might try to kill himself all over again.
Elsewhere, after what felt like ages, Leeanne finally started to wake up.
She was still underwater. Gideon had just come to as well, wide–eyed and silent, while Emmett hadn’t come around yet.
The three of them were still tangled up in the net, and up ahead, they could see Mila forging ahead, never slowing down.
Mila was moving fast, but Leeanne could see her tail was barely holding together.
The Mermaid Queen had slashed it twice before, leaving deep gashes as marks. Now those wounds were spreading, and that section of her tail had gone black, looking like it could fall apart any second.
Mila’s speed was dropping fast; anyone could tell she was on the verge of collapsing
Leeanne shouted, “Mila, stop! Let us swim on our own. Come with us. Let’s go back together!”
Mila’s words came out in broken fragments, barely audible. “No… we need to get as far from the Mermaid Palace as possible. If we’re too close, the Queen will sense us… she’ll know exactly where we are. And for now, you can’t go back to the raft… If you do, she’ll tear it apart!”
Leeanne was stunned. “Is that really how it is?”
‘So now we’re being chased by the Queen? Leeanne thought. We’re not allowed to return to the raft? And if we do, she’ll just destroy it?
‘Is Mila going all out just because she’s afraid the Queen will sense our location and come after us? Leeanne thought
Are we totally homeless now? Leeanne thought.
Leeanne urged, “Mila, stop! Go ahead and escape first. We’ll figure something out ourselves.”
