Chapter 289
Emmett nodded with a sly grin. “Exactly! If we change her to a common mermaid color, she can just go and grab her stuff, right?”
Leeanne glanced at Mila. “Is that doable?”
Mila’s eyes widened in surprise. “Absolutely!”
She had always hated her current color.
Leeanne and Emmett jumped right into mixing colors. They grabbed some blue dye and started adding water in different amounts, tweaking it until they got that classic common mermaid light blue.
Once they had the shade matching a common mermaid, Leeanne began applying the dye to Mila’s hair.
Honestly, who knows if this will work? Might as well give it a try.

To their surprise, the dye was seriously high quality. It actually transformed Mila’s long, deep blue hair into a soft light blue.
Pulling off a shift from deep blue to light blue? That was pretty impressive.
The tail was a real challenge, since every scale had its own gradient.
But Mila handled it like a pro–with a dramatic flick, the color washed over her tail in one smooth motion.
Unless you really looked, you’d never spot the change.
All that was left now were her eyes.
Her eyes? No way to dye those.
Just then, another group of mermaids came searching nearby, almost discovering the cave.
Mila was done waiting. “Alright, this is it. I’ll keep my head down so they won’t see my face or eyes, grab my stuff, and leave right away. You guys stay put and wait for me.”
With those words, she ducked out of the cave.
The three looked at each other, worried.
They waited, nerves on edge, not sure how much time had passed, when suddenly, a burst of shouting from the mermaids erupted outside.
They heard someone yell, “Mila, where are you going?”
It was the Queen herself.
The three exchanged worried looks as Mila hurried back into the cave.

Leeanne squeezed out first, Gideon right behind her. Emmett shouted from inside, anxious, “I can’t get out! The opening’s way too small for me.”
The cave was only big enough for someone skinny to slip through. Gideon and Emmett had come in earlier, but now Emmett was totally stuck.
Gideon yelled. “Just wait.”
Ironically, given the situation, staying inside the cave was actually the safest bet.
They stepped outside but kept hidden behind the cave entrance, sneaking a peek at what was going on.
The Queen was there, flanked by a dozen mermaids, facing off against Mila.
Mila was hugging a little blue seahorse plush, about four inches long, slung across her back.
The Queen’s expression was torn between tears and laughter. “Mila, you’re alright. I just knew you wouldn’t die. Come to me, Mila.”
Mila said, “Mom, I’ve already become an evil mermaid!”
The Queen’s voice was gentle. “I don’t care, Mila. Come home.”
Mila retorted, “Is that so? But your dagger slashed my tail, and it really hurt!”
The Queen’s face froze for a moment. “Did it? Mila, I was careless.”
Mila insisted, “But Mom, I can’t let you have my tailbone. If I do, I’ll actually die.”
Leeanne’s heart dropped. Mila was still so young. She’d just blurted out everything she’d heard to the Queen. Now, the Queen probably wouldn’t let her go.
Sure enough, the Queen’s face grew serious. “Mila, where are you going?”
Mila said, “I honestly don’t know where I’ll end up, but I do know I can’t stay here any longer.”
The Queen’s face hardened. “You’re an evil mermaid. You can’t leave. If I let you go, I’d be putting the whole tribe in danger.”
The mermaids behind her shouted, “Yeah! Evil mermaids are a curse. We have to get rid of her.”
“Kill the evil mermaid.”
“The Queen won’t play favorites! Take out Mila, destroy the evil mermaid.”
“Kill her! Kill her.”
The mermaids‘ emotions were running wild, their voices rising in a frenzy.
They’d been taught from childhood that evil mermaids had to be killed. Otherwise, everyone would be done
for.

Chapter 289
So deep down, they’d always wanted to kill Mila.
But they never had the nerve, since the Queen always held them back.

Now that the Queen was willing to sacrifice her own daughter for the tribe, the others finally had the guts to shout out loud.
Mila gave a bitter smile and asked, “Mom, is that what you want? Are you really going to kill me?”
The Queen’s expression hardened. “Leaving isn’t an option. Mila, you’re coming back with me!”
Suddenly, a voice echoed through the crowd. “Mila, you can’t come back.”
Elvis swam forward, stopping right in front of the Queen. “Please, Mom, let Mila go.”
It had only been a few days, but Elvis looked much paler now. His energy was even worse than before.
The Queen said, “Elvis, you’re not feeling well. Head back and rest up. I’ll take care of this.”
Elvis shook his head. “Mom, let Mila go.”
He turned to Mila and said, “Go, right now.”
He paused, then pointed at the cave. “And don’t forget your friends. If you leave by yourself, they won’t be able to get past the barrier outside.”
Leeanne froze, her mind racing. ‘Have we been found?‘ she wondered.
Actually, the Queen already knew there were people hiding inside the cave–she was just too busy stopping Mila to do anything about it.
The Queen shot a cold glance at the cave and commanded, “Blow it up!”
Emmett heard everything from inside and yelled, “Wait, don’t! There are people in here!”
‘Alright, we’re exposed. No point hiding now, Leeanne thought.
Right on cue, her disguise faded in an instant, snapping her back to her true self.
Gideon’s transformation ended at the same time. He grabbed his Heavy Blade, gave the cave entrance a powerful swing, and busted it open, pulling Emmett out.
The three quickly rushed to Mila’s side.
Now that the three of them were back in their human forms, the Queen squinted, sizing them up. She jabbed
a finger at Emmett. “Wait, didn’t this guy show up in the Mermaid Palace before?”
He was way too chunky to forget. She vaguely recalled spotting a fat mermaid once and thought it was pretty weird at the time.
