Leeanne snapped awake.

She quickly let Snowy out and had her use her super hearing.

No other choice–the Mermaid Queen was way too strong. Leeanne didn’t dare sneak over to eavesdrop herself, so she had Little Blue peek and Snowy listen, then fill her in on everything.

Snowy had done this several times already, so she knew exactly what to do. Her descriptions were so vivid, Leeanne felt like she was right there in the middle of it all.

Snowy said, “The Mermaid Queen is standing in front of the freezer where Mila is kept. She’s crying again, talking to Mila.”

The Mermaid Queen’s face was full of sorrow. “Mila, wake up. I miss you so much. You’re so strong, you can’t really be gone.”

Snowy said, “The Mermaid Queen is really pitiful!”

After crying for a bit, the Mermaid Queen wiped her tears and walked away.

Just as Leeanne was about to call Snowy back, Little Blue suddenly cried out, ‘Whoa, what’s going on? Why am I seeing Elvis? That’s the mermaid prince! The Queen just carried him over while he was totally knocked out.’

Little Blue said, “Oh wow, the Mermaid Queen just put the prince on Mila’s bed. What’s she planning?

“Man, after all that, the prince still isn’t waking up. Did she give him something to knock him out?”

Little Blue had mentioned before that the Mermaid Queen had set up an ice chest in Mila’s bedroom, filled with chilled water and ice cubes, with Mila soaking inside.

Now, Mila was in the ice chest, Elvis was lying on her bed, and the Queen was standing right between them. Leeanne thought, ‘No matter how you look at it, this whole setup is just downright bizarre.

Leeanne was dying to see it for herself.

Snowy decided to stick around.

Snowy said, “The Mermaid Queen is talking to herself again!”

The Mermaid Queen said, “Mila, I love you!”

Little Blue shouted, “Oh my god, the Mermaid Queen just grabbed a dagger and is waving it at Mila. What’s she doing? Is she about to dissect Mila’s body?”

Luckily, she and Leeanne were communicating through their mental link. Otherwise, the Mermaid Queen would’ve caught them for sure.

Little Blue said, “The Mermaid Queen is about to dismantle Mila! Oh my god, she’s drawing lines, splitting her tail into three sections. She’s really going to chop her up like a fish! Ugh, this old witch is even worse than I imagined!”

Little Blue said, “She’s making her move!”

Leeanne broke out in a cold sweat.

Mila wasn’t actually dead. She was just playing possum. It was all part of the plan she and Leeanne had cooked up together.

Leeanne always felt there was something off about the Mermaid Queen, but she couldn’t just blurt it out to Mila. After all, Mila was her daughter.

So, she and Mila decided to fake Mila’s death and see how the Queen would react.

If the Queen really loved Mila, even if Mila turned into an evil mermaid, she’d still stick by her, try to help her out, and figure out a way to fix things. Then Leeanne could finally stop worrying.

Mila could finally let go of all the grudges with her mom and actually get along with her.

But if the Queen couldn’t accept the way Mila was now, Leeanne would just take her away and help her sort out all her problems.

Mila was strong enough to play dead, but she could still hear everything people said, pick up on their emotions, and even “see” whatever was happening within 15 feet around her.

But as long as she stayed in this fake death state, she couldn’t do anything to defend herself.

She could keep up the act for 24 hours, and it wouldn’t end until tomorrow morning.

According to mermaid tradition, the body of a child who passed away had to be kept for three days before they could be laid to rest.

Leeanne and Mila never thought the Mermaid Queen would actually try to cut Mila up.

This was totally out of left field. Leeanne and Mila had run through every possible scenario in their heads, but this one never even crossed their minds.

Leeanne was sweating bullets, her heart pounding with panic.

With her skills, there was no way she could take on the Mermaid Queen, especially when they were on her

turf.

In a panic, Leeanne dashed over to Gideon and shouted, “Spill it. Did you steal my stash of dried kelp?”

She stormed up to Gideon and stomped down hard on his tail.

Gideon was half asleep when Leeanne suddenly charged at him. Her stomp landed right on his tail, and the pain shot through him like a bolt of lightning

Before he could even react. Leeanne grabbed his arm and dragged him away, yelling at the top of her lungs. “Why’d you steal my kelp, huh? Why? That’s my precious stash. I slaved over it!”

Leeanne was relying on Little Blue and Snowy to see and hear everything. She wasn’t actually that close to Mila’s bedroom herself, and if she got any closer, she’d be right in the middle of the mermaid quarters.

Mermaids were always bored and loved a good show. The moment they heard the commotion, they all rushed out of their houses to see what was going on.

Gideon reacted in a flash. As soon as he saw the crowd gathering, he broke free from Leeanne and shouted, “I

Leeanne shot back. “If it wasn’t you, then who was it? I saw dried kelp stuck in your teeth just now!”

Gideon was speechless.

He thought, Why did I have to binge on dried kelp? This is all on me.

I didn’t even brush my teeth last night. Maybe there really is some kelp stuck in there.
