Chapter 153
Of course, the base also offered plenty of jobs for residents.
People who helped build and maintain the base earned extra points, which they could trade at the dining hall for food.
Roughly speaking, a grown man working a full day could earn about one point, which was enough for a slice of white bread.
Under these scarce conditions, Base K1 ran tight every day.
Hayley followed Liam to their second mess hall.
The first mess hall was for the general public. The second one was reserved for base soldiers and administrators.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
Liam swiped his ID at the machine three times. The first swipe was free, but the next two deducted peints. Each swipe cost three points.
Soon, three plates of whole wheat bread and hot soup were served. The soup was a simple vegetable broth with a few ingatballs.
Even so, this meal was clearly better than what the public mess served. This was the special dining area.
“Ms. Reid, our conditions are a little rough. Hope you don’t mind,” Liam said.
Hayley looked at the plain food. “You just got promoted. You still eat the same as everyone else?”
“Yes,” Liam said, offering Hayley the portion with a few extra meatballs as a gesture of hospitality.
Hayley took a deep breath. “Well… How about you and your team just join my base? Conditions here are so rough that even my dogs would shake their heads.”
Liam smiled but didn’t reply.
Hayley still nibbled on half a piece of white bread to be polite, treating it like a proper meal. She didn’t touch the bowl of bland soup or the low–quality meatballs at all.
With her improved lifestyle, she simply couldn’t eat that stuff, so she left it all for Leonard.
After all, Hayley always put her people first. Even if she was mooching off Liam’s food, that principle still applied.
Leonard wasn’t picky at all. If it was food, he’d eat it.
When they finished, Liam noticed Hayley hadn’t eaten much.
“I’ll show you our market later,” he said.
“Sure.”
Hayley wanted to learn more about this fabled Base K1, so as they left the mess, she asked, “How many teams are heading out tomorrow?”
“About seven teams.”
“Is the mission really low risk?”
“The grain reserve is huge and sparsely staffed. The surrounding land is wide open, but the main thoroughfares have a lot of zombies. We’ll need to work together. If you stick with us, the danger should be manageable.”
Hayley nodded in understanding.
Right then, they reached Base Ki’s market.
