Chapter 186

A few minutes later, all of them finally understood that Hayley was actually a leader from another base.

Hayley told them clearly that if they followed her back, they would get three full meals with meat a day, and they wouldn’t have to do anything except research. She would even get them proper lab equipment again.

After hearing that, everyone looked at each other a disbelief, then slowly turned toward Cyril

Cyril thought for a long moment before saying, “Captain Reid, we still have family members.”

“How many? And who are they?” Hayley asked.

Cyril took her to their living area. Inside were six middle-aged women, three kids around eight or nine years old, and one elderly woman in her sixties.

They were all doing small handiwork, mending old clothes and repairing backpacks, probably trying to earn a few points on the side.

After looking them over, Hayley nodded.

“I can take all of them. But once they get to my base, they’ll need to work. I don’t take anyone who contributes nothing.”

Cyril nodded in approval. “But what kind of work could they even do?”

“Plenty,” Hayley said. “We can farm, raise pigs, and there are tons of different tasks. As long as they’re willing to work, there’s always something to do. And I promise you, if they put in the effort, they’ll get pasta and rice every meal, meat every day, snacks, brand-new clothes, and more!”

Cyril’s tired eyes lit up instantly.

The others stared at her in outright shock.

They could have pasta and rice every day, meat every day.

There were also snacks and new clothes.

Was she describing heaven?

After all eighteen of them had discussed among themselves, one family decided they couldn’t go.

The husband and wife didn’t trust Hayley’s words. They thought it was too unrealistic.

It was the apocalypse, and no one was eating well. Base K1 was already the largest place they had ever seen. How could there be another base where meat was guaranteed?

And after finally settling smoothly in Base K1, they didn’t want to risk anything. The man was stronger than the rest, so the construction team tolerated him even though they kicked the others out.

He and his wife debated seriously, especially since they had an eight-year-old daughter. Staying felt safer.

“Professor Floyd, we’re not going,” the man said. “You know my wife’s health isn’t great. We finally found a stable place. We don’t want to take any risks.”

Cyril shook his head. “Jordan, because your wife isn’t healthy, you should come with us even more. I truly believe Captain Reid’s base is the right place for people like us. Don’t miss this chance.”

“Can you guarantee what she said is all real?” Jordan Malone asked. “Work? Food? A place to live? How do we know it won’t fall apart after we get there? We don’t want to gamble everything.”

“Professor Floyd, if you want to leave, go ahead!” snapped Iris Malone, Jordan’s wife. “But don’t drag Jordan along! He’s been held back by all of you long enough!”

The others bristled with irritation, but Cyril raised a hand. “Enough. Everyone has their own path. Let’s go.”

“Good! And don’t let the door hit you on the way out!” Iris continued. “If it weren’t for traveling with all of you, Jordan wouldn’t have been dragged down! Without you all, our family would live even better!”
