The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 189

Chapter 189

“Let’s go. I’ve got something to tell you.” Liam gestured ahead.

“Okay, sure.” Hayley turned toward Cyril and the others. “You don’t need to bring anything. Just your people. Come with me tomorrow. I’ll take all of you.”

Liam added, “It’s a good thing you’re going with Ms. Reid.”

He said it casually, but to Cyril’s group, it was like divine certification. He then walked off with Hayley, leaving the shantytown.

The moment he disappeared, everyone’s eyes lit up.

“You heard that, right? Captain Caldwell himself said Ms. Reid’s base is good!”

“I heard it, too! Captain Caldwell never talks like that.”

“Then we made the right choice. Leaving with Ms. Reid is the smart move.”

“Forget everything else. Just look at her strength. She really does have the ability to take us out of here!”

That last sentence was a direct hit to Iris. She had watched with her own eyes how respectfully Liam treated Hayley. He was definitely attentive, if not deferential.

She had mocked Hayley earlier, saying Hayley was bragging with no ability. Then Hayley casually called Liam over like it was nothing, akin to delivering Iris a blatant slap in the face.

Now, Iris’s cheeks burned. She wanted to dig a hole and hide. “Whatever. Who knows what her place is like? Jordan! Luna! Let’s go home!”

Jordan immediately ducked his head and scurried back.

Luna Malone, who had been playing with the other kids, looked heartbroken. “Are you guys really leaving?”

“Don’t be sad, Luna. Once we get there, we’ll send you a radio/message.”

Luna brightened. “Okay! I’ll wait!”

People slowly dispersed to pack their few belongings. Their eyes carried a spark of hope. Tomorrow might change everything. Hayley followed Liam back toward his villa. They hadn’t even stepped inside before they heard something slamming around. “General Caldwell, think it over. The evolution serum is the future of humanity, You know that. Are you really going to hold back

Γ the base’s development?”

“Get out!”

A moment later, a middle-aged man in a pristine suit walked out. Even in the apocalypse, he dressed like a corporate executive

He spotted Liam returning and immediately put on a courteous smile.

“Captain Caldwell! Perfect timing. Please talk some sense into your grandfather. I’m not asking for much. You run your department, and I run mine. We don’t interfere in each other’s business. Isn’t that the best way to advance the base together?”

Liam looked at the man with a cold stare so sharp that the temperature seemed to drop. He said nothing.

The man swallowed the rejection without blinking. Then, he noticed Hayley. “Who’s this young lady? I don’t believe we’ve met.

“Mr. Barnes, she’s my guest,” Liam said flatly as he brushed past Edmond Barnes and led Hayley inside.

As they passed him, Edmond’s polite expression twisted into something dark and venomous.

He had the evolution serum in his hands now. He was eager to watch how fast their empire would crumble.

Hayley caught every flicker of that hostility. Once she stepped inside, she asked, “Is that guy Nadia’s dad?”
