The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 197

Chapter 197

The next morning, an armored vehicle sped down a deserted highway, cutting through the open wilderness.

As it got closer to the city, the road ahead split into two completely different scenes.

On the right, the outbound lane was jammed with cars. Wrecks piled into more wrecks, trapping every vehicle behind them in a massive deadlock that stretched as far as the eye could see.

On the left, the inbound lane they were driving on was completely empty, not a single car in sight.

Everyone was fighting to escape the city. No one wanted to go in.

Hayley sat in the passenger seat, watching the outside world with calm eyes.

Up ahead, a man appeared on the road, his head tilted at an unnatural angle. He wore a baseball cap, a white T-shirt, and ripped dark blue jeans.

His white shirt was splattered with dried red-and-black stains. His stylish jeans were torn into long strips, flapping in the wind.

The fashionable zombie sensed approaching movement. He turned his head, revealing a face mangled beyond recognition.

From his chin to his neck, all the flesh had been ripped open. The clean lines of his jawbone and exposed tendons were clearly visible, as if someone had sunk their teeth into his jaw and torn it straight off.

His legs were covered in bloody claw marks, the tough denim shredded into thin ribbons.

When the stylish zombie saw Hayley’s vehicle approaching, a bloodthirsty glow flared up in his murky eyes. He opened his shredded mouth, and thick black pus spilled from the torn edges of his throat as he let out an excited screech.

“Raarh!”

Bam!

The stylish zombie was launched into the air as the armored vehicle smashed right through him.

By the time he hit the ground again, the car had already sped several yards ahead.

Bam!

Thud!

Thud!

After him, about five more zombies were knocked aside in quick succession.

Hayley and Leonard didn’t slow down or stop to fight. They just crushed straight through and continued full speed toward

Aecraton.

Since the day the zombie virus broke out, Hayley hadn’t set foot inside a city. She had escaped to the outskirts and spent all her time clearing the zombies around her territory.

However, the zombies she encountered were nothing like the ones inside a city.

She had never once touched the core zones where people used to live. She always expanded outward into the quiet outer regions, where fewer zombies were roaming around.

The only large zombie horde she had ever encountered was at the food processing factory near the outskirts, but even that was still only a suburban area.

If the food factory’s zombie count was one, then the number inside Aecraton was a thousand, maybe even ten thousand.

Most of the population had lived in the cities. Almost no one made it out. Those who couldn’t escape either turned into zombies or became Zombie food.

A sea of people became a sea of corpses.

Cities were practically zombie headquarters.

The only good news was that Cyril’s research institute wasn’t in downtown Aecraton. It was in a tech park on the outer edge.

Once they entered the highway, it was only about two miles away.

Zombies began appearing more frequently.

The moment they crossed into Aecraton, every zombie wandering nearby was alerted and started rushing toward the road.

It turned into something like a marathon, with hordes pouring in from every direction to chase Hayley’s vehicle.

“Raarh!”
