Chapter 25
After sending that message, Hayley didn’t get a single reply
She sat there, spoon in hand, staring at the screen for 15 minutes. By the time her first bite of pasta cooled down, there was still nothing.
Zombies changed fast-one to ten minutes after a bite. Weak individuals would turn in a minute, while strong ones could last maybe ten.
And slicing off a bitten limb? Forget it. The virus would flood the blood immediately, spreading through the body so fast that there was no chance to survive.
Hayley could almost predict the girl’s fate.
Her brother would start gasping for air, then turn black all over and go cold and stiff for a few seconds. If someone killed him at that moment, maybe they could survive.
But her dad, favoring the boy, and her stepmom, who loved him, wouldn’t allow it. Those few seconds of hesitation would be enough to send them all to hell together.
Hayley shook her head. She closed the forum and picked a lighthearted family movie to watch as she ate.
She had helped Sunny as much as she could. If the girl had listened, she would have hidden in the convenience store from the start, cut herself off from the others completely, or taken decisive action with her brother. She wouldn’t have ended up trapped like this.
But 99% of people would act that way.
Even when they felt terrified, they would jump blindly into their own fire. They were foolish, just like she had been in her past life.
Luckily, this time, Hayley wouldn’t repeat that mistake. She would kill anyone who tried to push her around. She would live however she wanted and do whatever she wanted. In the apocalypse, she would finally live for herself.
Hayley stopped checking posts. After finishing her meal, she went back to training.
She started with light exercises to digest her food. Once her stomach felt settled, she moved on to high-intensity physical training.
Seven days flew by.
Hayley’s routine these days was simple: train, shower, eat, rain.
Out of 24 hours, she spent 18 hours training. Her workouts were scientific and professional, so the more she exercised, the sharper and more energized she felt.
Her physical fitness improved visibly. A six-mile run no longer left her winded. Her strength had also been doubled. She could lift 100 pounds of pasta with one hand when she used to need two.
Her hand-to-hand combat skills had returned to when she was at her peak. She could take out five grown men at once with no weapons. With a weapon, she could kill with single strike.
After finishing today’s session, she grabbed some beef stew to eat.
It was from the 500 pounds of fresh beef she had stockpiled before the apocalypse. She cooked them in a pressure cooker with spices, then sliced and served them with sauce They were perfectly tender and flavorful.
