Chapter 266
The vehicle drove straight toward a factory on the outskirts of town.
Even after the car stopped, Ruby still refused to let go of Hayley’s hand. There were too many people here, and most of them
were men.
“Aunt Ruby, this is my place. You’re safe here,” Hayley said gently.
Ruby still didn’t loosen her grip.
Hayley had everyone else get out first and settle the other women they had rescued from the car. Only then did she bring Ruby
inside.
“Don’t worry. From now on, nobody will ever hurt you again.”
It took a long while before Ruby finally looked up at her. “Holly…?”
“It’s me.”
“I finally found you!” Ruby wrapped her arms around Hayley and shook as she cried. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”
Hayley stayed with Ruby until she calmed down, then looked at the face that so closely resembled her mother’s. “You were really looking for me?”
“Yes. Before the outbreak, I discovered the zombie virus overseas. I knew something terrible was coming, so I rushed back to find you all. By the way, where’s your mom? And your grandparents?”
“They…passed away a long time ago.”
Ruby froze.
“Grandpa died three years after you left. Grandma followed soon after. My mom died in a car accident when I was fourteen. At least they didn’t have to see the world turn into this,” Hayley said calmly.
It took Ruby a long time before she could speak again. “It’s all my fault… If I hadn’t been so stubborn back then, none of this would’ve happened.”
“It’s not on you,” Hayley said, patting her shoulder. “Even if you’d stayed, it wouldn’t have changed things.”
Ruby looked up and gently touched Hayley’s hair. “But at least you would have grown up alone.”
“It was fine. By the way, you said you detected the virus overseas?”
“Yes. The virus existed long before the apocalypse, but it was dormant. My team and I had been studying it. When I realized it was completely out of control, I rushed back. But I was too late On the day I landed, the outbreak went worldwide
Ruby’s face turned heavy
