The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 28

Chapter 28

After watching that livestream, Hayley’s computer beeped once, and then the screen went dead.

Not because the content was too gory or banned.

No-the website’s servers had crashed.

The city still had electricity, and the internet still worked-but the servers that ran websites scattered across the country didn’t all fail at the same time.

Some small servers, kept at a manager’s home or office, had already gone down in the first few days of the apocalypse. Bigger companies could last longer without anyone managing them.

But clearly, this major video platform had completely died.

That meant the internet frenzy was slowly ending.

For a while, no one would be logging on to vent or watch livestreams. People had to face the apocalypse head-on.

Hayley shut down the website and opened her downloaded movie library. Luckily, she had already downloaded everything she could find. She would have no shortage of films to watch while living alone.

After finishing her meal, she paused her movie halfway through.

Suddenly, her monitors started beeping.

Hayley sprinted to her control console. All her surveillance devices were hooked into her big computer. Among the dozens of screens, a small, otherwise unnoticeable one lit

Hayley froze for a second.

It was the monitor for the warehouse she had rented before.

She had taken Summer and all the supplies from that warehouse on the day the apocalypse hit, and had completely forgotten to remove the cameras.

Now, the feed showed the warehouse doors being broken into. Because she had bought quality cameras with audio, she could hear the voices outside, too.

“The woman rented this warehouse from me over two weeks ago. I saw tons of delivery trucks coming and going-she’s gotta have supplies!”

“But isn’t it illegal to go inside? You rented it to someone else!”

“Are you kidding me? It’s the freaking apocalypse! Who cares about laws? Grab it now!”

“Exactly! Even if she has stuff, we deserve our share!”

The warehouse doors Hayley had left were smashed open. The old landlord and a large group of people barged inside, full of confidence.

But when they saw the inside…

They all froze.

“What the hell? It’s empty?”

“Is this what you meant by full of supplies?”

The old landlord stared at the empty warehouse, not even a cardboard box in sight. “This is impossible! I saw trucks here every day. She came a few times daily-how could she have moved everything out?”

“You must’ve seen it wrong! Probably not every delivery was for her-she just took a few packages and left with them!”

“What bad luck! All that worry and stress just to walk here for nothing!”

The group muttered angrily and left.

Before going, the old landlord spotted one of Hayley’s cameras and smashed it with his stick.

Beep…

One of her monitors lost signal.

Hayley leaned back in her chair, stretching, and couldn’t help smiling.

She had known people would try to find her-that was exactly why she had prepared a separate warehouse.

Once the apocalypse hit, human greed and ugliness would be out in full force. If anyone knew where her main base was, they’d come.

Better safe than sorry.

Watching them leave frustrated and empty-handed, she felt quietly triumphant.

Except… Hayley held grudges.

She wasn’t about to forget the old guy who smashed her camera.
