Chapter 34
“Move it!”
Tanner shoved the two women forward. When they stepped into the firing range and no arrows came, his eyes lit up.
“Stay right there! Don’t move!”
Now, he was sure of it. The shooter inside had some morals and wouldn’t kill innocent women. That meant he could use the women against the shooter.
“Tanner, what now?” one of his men asked.
“Get the truck out, change the tire, and then have these two lead the way,” Tanner ordered.
They dragged the truck to a safe spot, pulled out two spare tires, and swapped them in. Then, they tied the women to the front of the truck.
The message was obvious: if the shooter tried to attack them, the women would die first.
If Hayley didn’t care about their lives, they could still speed off in the truck. But if she held back… Then they would get inside and kill her.
In the apocalypse, morals didn’t mean a damn thing.
With the tires replaced and their hostages tied to the hood, they piled into the truck. The barricade Hayley had set up loomed ahead. With a roar, they gunned it and smashed through.
This time, nothing stopped them. No arrows, no explosions. It went smoothly.
The group grinned in relief.
Then-thwip!
A bolt carrying a pouch of fresh chicken blood slammed into their truck door. The arrowhead pierced halfway through, pinning the door shut from the outside.
The men inside froze. Before they could react, more bolts hit from both sides.
Bang!
Their tires blew out again. The truck spun in a half-circle and screeched to a stop.
Blood splattered across the vehicle, dripping down the sides. The stench of raw blood filled the air, instantly turning their truck into a magnet for every zombie around.
The zombies on the roadside started closing in fast. Inside, the men were trapped like sardines in a can.
“Oh, no!”

“Damn it! We got tricked!”
“Can we still get out?”
“The doors won’t open!”
Tanner stared at the horde closing in. Thinking fast, he rolled down the window and scrambled out, dragging one of the women with him as a human shield.
He wasn’t stupid-he kept her in front of him the whole way.
But before he got far, a half-bodied zombie lunged from the ground and grabbed his leg. Tanner shoved the woman toward it, shaking free.
Thwip!
An arrow shot at his back. He barely ducked in time, his instincts saving him.
